The Eighth Trigger

Dr. Arthur Windsor was one of London's most distinguished psychiatrists, a member of the Royal Medical Society who specialized in hysteria and dissociative identity disorder. His wife, Isabella, had been ill for seven years. Every night, she became someone else. Sometimes she was an eighteenth-century French maid. Sometimes she was an Indian dancer. Sometimes she was a child who had never been born.

Arthur documented every "conversion," trying to find a pattern. He found one: before each conversion, Isabella said the same words. "They are coming."

In October 1888, London experienced a series of bizarre "non-human" sightings. Workers in Whitechapel reported seeing "creatures with eyes" flying in the sky. The Times attributed them to gas leaks causing mass hallucination. But Arthur knew better, because Isabella described these creatures in precise detail during every conversion: their shapes, their colors, their movement patterns.

Dr. Henry Stanton, chairman of the Royal Medical Society, asked Arthur to submit a formal report. Arthur began to suspect that Isabella's "illness" might not be illness at all, but a perception ability. She could see things Arthur could not see. Those "spaceships" might be real, and the medical establishment might be refusing to acknowledge them.

But there was a darker turn. Arthur discovered in Isabella's medical records that Isabella had never "converted." Her seventeen personalities—each one describing alien beings—had been implanted by Arthur himself.

Arthur was not a doctor. He was a member of the secret department "Eighth Trigger" of the Royal Medical Society. Their mission was not to treat mental illness, but to create it. Isabella was a voluntary test subject who had agreed to have seventeen personalities implanted in her consciousness that could "see alien beings," to verify a hypothesis: the human brain could be programmed to perceive information beyond the normal spectrum.

But Arthur had forgotten to tell Isabella the truth. He had fallen in love with the experiment—with Isabella's different faces in each personality. He didn't want her to know it was all fake.

The story ends with Arthur sitting by Isabella's bed, watching her sleep. Her eyes move rapidly behind closed lids—she is experiencing her eighteenth personality. Arthur picks up his pen and writes in the medical record: "Patient normal today."

Then he blows out the candle. In the darkness, Isabella's eyes open—silver, non-human—and she looks at Arthur and smiles. "I know you're lying, dear."

Arthur is not surprised. He has always known. He simply chooses to continue lying.
