The Crown of Thorns

The city of Oakhaven was a concrete jungle where the only law was the one written in blood. Vincent had started at the bottom, a street-level pusher with a knack for reading people. He didn't have a family or a code; he only had a hunger that never ended.

Vincent's rise was a masterclass in betrayal. He had spent ten years climbing the hierarchy of the Moretti crime family. He had been the same man who held the flashlight while his mentor was executed; he had been the one to leak the location of his best friend's safehouse to the police.

He didn't do it out of hate. He did it because it was the most efficient path to the top. He viewed people as obstacles or assets, never as humans.

By thirty-five, Vincent was the Don. He sat in a leather chair in a dimly lit office, the city's skyline shimmering outside his window like a pile of broken diamonds. He owned the docks, the unions, and the mayor. He was the apex predator of Oakhaven.

But the top of the mountain was a cold place. Every time Vincent closed his eyes, he heard the voices. Not ghosts, but memories. The sound of his mentor's plea, the look of shock on his friend's face. He had optimized his life for power, and in doing so, he had deleted every part of himself that was capable of feeling peace. He lived in a state of permanent hyper-vigilance, trusting no one and fearing everyone.

One night, his youngest lieutenant, a boy named Leo who reminded Vincent of his younger self, came to him with a look of absolute devotion. "I'd die for you, Boss," Leo said.

Vincent looked at the boy and felt a sudden, violent wave of nausea. He realized that Leo's devotion was not love; it was the same hunger that had driven Vincent. Leo wasn't loyal to Vincent; he was loyal to the power Vincent represented. He was just waiting for the moment Vincent became a liability.

He knew that one day, Leo would do to him exactly what he had done to everyone else. The cycle was inevitable.

Vincent poured himself a glass of scotch and stared at the city. He had won the game, but the prize was a lifetime of looking over his shoulder. He was the King of Oakhaven, and his crown was made of thorns that grew deeper into his skull every single day.
