The Puppet of the Pines (Variant V-14)
The town of Blackwood Creek was a place where the pines grew too tall and the secrets grew too deep. It was a community governed by the "Council of Elders," a group of men whose families had owned the valley since the first settlers arrived, and whose word was the only law that mattered.
Julian Thorne had come to Blackwood Creek as a stranger, a young man with a strange, unsettling gift: he could "read" the hidden desires of others. He didn't see them as visions; he felt them as physical pressures, as a tugging on a string that connected his mind to theirs.
At first, the gift was a curiosity. But the Council quickly realized its value. They didn't want Julian to be a citizen; they wanted him to be a tool.
They isolated him in a cottage at the edge of the woods, providing him with everything he needed, provided he spent his days "reading" the townspeople for them. He became the same as a living radar, detecting dissent before it could be spoken, uncovering infidelities before they were acted upon, and identifying the exact price at which any man could be bought.
"You are the eyes of the valley, Julian," the Head Elder, a man with a voice like grinding stones, told him. "You are the reason this town remains pure."
But the gift had a hidden cost. The more Julian read the desires of others, the more his own desires were erased. He became a void, a hollow vessel that only contained the reflected wants of the people around him.
He stopped wanting to leave. He stopped wanting to love. He stopped wanting to exist.
He became the perfect servant. He didn't just predict the desires of the town; he began to execute them with a terrifying, mindless precision. If the Council wanted a business ruined, Julian knew exactly which secret to whisper in the right ear. If they wanted a rebel silenced, he knew the exact moment of their greatest psychological vulnerability.
He was no longer a man; he was a biological extension of the Council's will.
The climax came when the Council decided to "purge" a family of newcomers who had dared to question the land rights of the valley. Julian was tasked with breaking the father's spirit, using his gift to find the one thing the man loved most and then destroying it.
As Julian stood before the man, he felt the father's desire—a pure, uncomplicated love for his daughter. It was a frequency Julian hadn't felt in years. For a split second, the reflection triggered a memory of his own lost humanity.
He tried to resist. He tried to scream, to fight the invisible strings that were pulling his limbs. But the "gift" had become a cage. His body moved independently of his will. He watched, a horrified passenger in his own skin, as he spoke the words that would destroy the family.
He saw the father's face collapse into a mask of absolute despair. He felt the man's heart break, and for the first time, Julian felt the pain as if it were his own.
But the moment passed. The strings tightened.
Julian walked back to his cottage in the woods, his expression blank, his eyes empty. He sat in his chair and waited for the next instruction.
He was the most powerful man in Blackwood Creek, for he knew every secret in the valley. And he was the most pathetic creature in existence, for he no longer had a secret of his own. He was a puppet made of flesh, dancing to a tune played by men who feared the very silence he had become.
