The Altar of Power

The fog of London in 1888 was not merely weather; it was a shroud for the dying. Arthur stood at the window of his mahogany-paneled office, the Prime Minister's seal resting heavily on his desk. He had climbed the mountain of corpses, stepping over the broken bodies of those who had once called him a lunatic.

Twenty years ago, Arthur had been the golden boy of the aristocracy, a prodigy of diplomacy. Then came the Betrayal. His own uncle had forged documents, painted him as a psychotic, and had him dragged screaming into the depths of Bedlam Asylum. In that white-walled hell, Arthur had learned the true geometry of power: it is not about truth, but about the perception of it.

He had spent a decade in that asylum, rotting in silence, until a young nurse named Clara had found him. She didn't see a madman; she saw a soul. She had smuggled him books, whispered stories of the world outside, and eventually, at the risk of her own life, helped him escape through a laundry chute in the dead of night.

"Go," she had whispered, her eyes reflecting a hope he didn't believe in. "Reclaim your name, Arthur. But do not become the monster they said you were."

Arthur had not listened. To reclaim his name, he had to become a monster. He had built an empire of blackmail and blood, weaving a web of secrets that strangled the British Empire from within. He had played the game of shadows, turning allies into puppets and enemies into ghosts.

Now, he was the most powerful man in England. But as he looked at the list of "impediments" his secretary had prepared for the final purge of the opposition, one name stopped his heart.

*Clara Thorne.*

She had stayed in the asylum, continuing her work, unaware that the man she saved was now the architect of the very system that oppressed her. To secure his absolute grip on the throne, Arthur had ordered the "cleansing" of the asylum's staff to erase any trace of his past.

The order had been executed an hour ago.

Arthur looked at his hands. They were clean, manicured, and trembling. He had reached the summit, but the altar of power required a sacrifice he hadn't realized he was making. He had won the world, and in doing so, he had murdered the only person who had ever loved the man he used to be.

He sat in his leather chair, the silence of the room becoming a deafening scream. He was the master of all he surveyed, and he was utterly, irrevocably alone.
