The Bloodline of Rot

The humidity of the Mississippi Delta didn't just cling to the skin; it seeped into the bone, carrying the scent of river mud and ancient decay. Silas returned to Blackwood Manor not as a conqueror, but as a ghost. The house was a skeletal remains of a dynasty, its white pillars peeling like dead skin, its gardens overgrown with vines that looked like strangling fingers.

He had been cast out twenty years ago, branded as a disappointment, a stain on the "pure" bloodline of the Blackwoods. But the letters had started coming—fragmented, terrified messages from his dying father, speaking of a "inheritance" that was not of gold, but of blood.

Silas began to explore the archives in the cellar, where the air was thick with the smell of mildew and old secrets. He found the journals. The first secret was simple: the Blackwood wealth hadn't come from cotton, but from a series of calculated betrayals and murders that spanned three generations.

With every secret he unearthed, Silas felt a strange kinship with the house. He began to experience "echoes"—visions of ancestors screaming in the hallways, the sound of a child crying behind the walls. He thought he was uncovering the truth to cleanse the family name.

The second secret was darker. The "purity" his father had obsessed over was a lie. The Blackwoods weren't pure; they were diluted, the result of a century of hidden incest and desperation to keep the land within the family. The "nobility" was a mask for a genetic rot.

By the time Silas reached the final journal, he no longer recognized himself in the mirror. His skin had taken on a greyish hue, and his thoughts were no longer his own. He realized that the "inheritance" was a psychic parasite, a family madness that fed on the obsession of its host.

He stood in the center of the grand ballroom, the floorboards groaning under his weight. He saw his father's ghost standing by the window, a hollow shell of a man.

"Now you see," the ghost whispered, "the blood doesn't just carry the name. It carries the debt."

Silas tried to scream, but the sound that came out was not his own. It was a chorus of a hundred dead Blackwoods, all screaming in unison. He didn't fight it anymore. He sat down in the dust, closed his eyes, and waited for the rot to finally take him home.
