The Void of Strength
Berlin, present day. The city was a concrete labyrinth of brutalist architecture and neon-lit nightclubs, a place where the past was a scar and the future was a question mark. Arthur Vance lived in the center of this void.
Arthur was a man of absolute power. He didn't have magic or superpowers; he simply had a mastery of the human machine that bordered on the divine. He could dismantle a man in three seconds or restart a heart with a single, precise strike. He was the ultimate protector, a man for whom no threat was too great and no distance too far.
But Arthur was hollow.
He had spent twenty years as a high-level operative for agencies that didn't exist, protecting people who didn't matter. He had seen every kind of cruelty and every form of betrayal. He had reached the pinnacle of strength, only to find that at the top, there was nothing but a cold, whistling wind.
He began to suffer from 'The Void'—a profound, existential boredom that made the act of breathing feel like a chore. The more powerful he became, the less he felt. He could save a hundred lives in a day, and it felt no different from folding a piece of paper.
He decided to conduct an experiment: he would attempt to become a 'nobody.'
He quit his job, burned his passports, and moved into a tiny apartment in Neukölln. He stopped training. He stopped analyzing. He tried to live a life of utter insignificance, working as a night porter in a failing hotel.
For a year, he was happy. He discovered the joy of a bad cup of coffee, the frustration of a broken heater, and the simple, human pleasure of being ignored. He felt the world returning to him, not as a series of targets, but as a place of texture and smell.
Then came the crisis.
A group of extremists took over the hotel, holding thirty guests hostage. They weren't professionals; they were desperate, unstable people with automatic weapons and a manifesto of hate.
Arthur stood in the lobby, watching the chaos. He saw a young woman, a guest he had grown fond of, trembling in the corner as a gunman screamed in her face.
He felt the Void returning. The old instincts surged—the calculation of angles, the timing of the strike, the absolute certainty of victory. He could end the situation in less than a minute. He could be the 'Strong Man' again.
But he also knew the cost. If he stepped back into that role, the void would swallow him again. He would stop seeing the woman as a person and start seeing her as a 'protected asset.' He would stop being a man and start being a weapon.
He stood there for a long minute, the gunman's voice a distant noise. He looked at his hands—soft now, no longer the instruments of death.
In a sudden, violent movement, Arthur didn't use his training. He didn't use a tactical strike. He simply threw himself in front of the woman and screamed—a raw, guttural, human sound of pure, unadulterated terror.
The gunman, startled by the sheer, unexpected vulnerability of the man, hesitated for a fraction of a second. It was enough. The hotel security, emboldened by the distraction, rushed in.
The crisis ended. No one died.
As the police led the gunmen away, the woman hugged Arthur, sobbing into his chest. He felt her heart beating, felt her warmth, and felt a profound, aching sadness.
He had saved her, but not as a protector. He had saved her as a fellow victim. And in that moment of shared fragility, Arthur Vance finally found the only strength that mattered: the courage to be weak.
