The House of Glass Whispers

The Blackwood Manor did not stand upon the earth; it sank into it. Surrounded by the weeping willows and the oppressive humidity of the Georgia coast, the house was a monument to a decayed nobility. Silas Blackwood was the last of the line, a man whose mind was a shattered mirror.

Silas suffered from "The Sight," or so the doctors in Savannah called his schizophrenia. He saw things—not ghosts, but echoes. He saw the house as it was and as it would be. He saw the wallpaper peeling in fast-forward; he saw the floorboards rotting before the rain had even fallen.

"The fire is coming," Silas would whisper to the dinner table, his eyes wide and vacant. "I can smell the cedar burning. I can see the curtains turning into black lace."

His family—his aunt, his cousins, the hangers-on who lived off the dwindling estate—treated him with a mixture of pity and disgust. They laughed at his "visions" while they fought over the silver and the land. To them, Silas was just a broken ornament in a broken house.

But the visions were precise. He predicted the death of the family hound three days before it choked on a bone. He predicted the collapse of the east wing exactly one hour before the beams gave way.

The tension in the house grew as the summer heat peaked. Silas became frantic. He saw the fire not as an accident, but as a cleansing. He saw the flames licking the portraits of his ancestors, erasing the history of slavery and cruelty that had built the manor.

On the night of the great storm, the lightning struck the copper weather-vane. The fire spread with a supernatural hunger, leaping from room to room. Silas stood in the center of the ballroom, watching the flames mirror the visions he had seen for years.

As the roof collapsed, Silas didn't run. He felt a profound sense of alignment. For the first time in his life, the world outside matched the world inside his head. He walked into the fire, not as a madman, but as a man finally coming home to the only truth he had ever known.

The manor burned for three days. When the smoke cleared, there was nothing left but a blackened scar on the earth and the lingering scent of burnt cedar.
