The House of Mirrors

Jack didn't play the cards; he played the man. In the velvet-lined basements of Manhattan's underground clubs, Jack was a ghost. He didn't rely on luck or a "system." He relied on the "Tell"—the microscopic flicker of a pupil, the slight shift in breathing, the subconscious twitch of a finger. He could read a man's soul in a single heartbeat.

He had spent a decade building a reputation as the "Unbeatable." He had stripped fortunes from senators and crushed the egos of billionaires. He believed he was the only one in the room who was truly awake, while everyone else was just following a script written by their own desires.

Then he met The Dealer.

The Dealer was a man of no name and no history, with eyes that looked like two polished coins. They played a high-stakes game of Baccarat for three nights. For the first two nights, Jack dominated. He read The Dealer's tells with ease—the slight lean forward, the rhythmic tapping of a ring. Jack felt the familiar rush of control.

On the third night, the game changed.

Jack made a massive bet, certain that The Dealer was bluffing. He had seen the tell—the exact same twitch he had seen the previous two nights. He pushed all his chips into the center, a confident smile on his face.

The Dealer revealed his hand. A perfect natural nine.

Jack froze. He looked at The Dealer, and for the first time, he felt a cold shiver of dread. He realized that the "tell" hadn't been a leak; it had been a lure. The Dealer had spent two nights training Jack to believe in a specific pattern, feeding him a false narrative of vulnerability.

Every "read" Jack had made, every "insight" he had used to win, had been carefully curated by the man across the table. Jack hadn't been reading the opponent; he had been reading a mirror designed to reflect his own arrogance.

"You're very good, Jack," The Dealer whispered, his voice like dry parchment. "You see exactly what I want you to see."

Jack looked at his empty chip stack. He realized that his entire identity—his "gift," his confidence, his perceived mastery—was just a tool used by someone else to lead him to this exact moment of ruin.

He hadn't been the predator. He had been the prey, groomed for a single, devastating harvest.

As he walked out into the rain-slicked streets of New York, Jack realized the most terrifying truth of all: he no longer knew if any of his "reads" were real, or if the rest of the world was just another set of mirrors designed to keep him blind.
