A Portrait of Mrs. Whitmore

There is a particular quality to London light in November. It falls through the windows of my studio like something already remembered, already mourned. I have painted many portraits, but I have never been visited by someone who seemed so determined to disappear even as she sat for me.

Mrs. Whitmore arrived precisely at four o'clock. She was perhaps forty, perhaps fifty—it was difficult to tell. Her face had the quality of a half-finished sentence, full of implications that never quite resolved.

"I require only a small portrait," she said. "Something suitable for my sister's drawing room."

I mixed my colors in silence. She did not speak of her husband, her children, her recent travels. She did not speak at all. She simply sat, her hands folded in her lap, her eyes fixed on some middle distance that I could not see.

I painted her lips first. They were the color of dried roses, slightly open, as if about to speak. But the words never came.

The afternoon light shifted. My tea grew cold. Still she sat, motionless, patient as a winter tree.

When I finally stepped back to examine my work, I understood what I had painted.

It was not Mrs. Whitmore. It was the absence of Mrs. Whitmore. The space she occupied in the world, the shape her presence made in the air.

She paid me in cash and left without looking at the portrait.

I have kept it. I do not know why.
