The coffee shop was called "Grounds," which Jamie thought was either very clever or very dumb, depending on her mood. Today she was leaning toward clever because the barista had drawn a little leaf in her foam art, and it was exactly the kind of small kindness that made the Chicago winter bearable.

"You're new," said the woman at the next table. She had a dog—a scruffy golden retriever mix—and a laptop covered in stickers.

"搬到这附近," Jamie said, slipping into Mandarin out of habit. Then: "I mean—yes. Just moved here."

The woman laughed. "我懂。I'm Mei. This is Biscuit."

Jamie bent to pet the dog. "I'm Jamie."

They talked. About nothing, about everything—where to get good noodles, which laundromat didn't eat quarters, the particular misery of Chicago winters. Mei was a graphic designer; Jamie was a nurse. They both liked true crime podcasts and hated cilantro.

"Can I have your number?" Mei asked. "For, like, friend stuff. Maybe coffee. Or—not coffee, I mean—"

Jamie laughed. "Friend stuff. Yes. I'd like that."

They exchanged numbers. Jamie left with her latte and her little paper cup of water for Biscuit and the strange, warm feeling that comes from meeting someone who might matter.

Three months later, she would call it the best decision she ever made, though it wasn't really a decision at all—just a moment, a dog, a barista who drew leaves in foam.

Some things are simple like that.
