The Last Supper of the Fallen

The fog of London in 1892 did not merely drift; it possessed the city, a grey, suffocating shroud that blurred the line between the cobblestones and the sky. In a derelict warming-hut perched precariously on the frozen lip of the Thames, Arthur and Julian sat. Once, their names had commanded respect in the salons of Mayfair; now, they were ghosts inhabiting living skin, their velvet frock coats frayed at the cuffs, their eyes hollowed by the relentless erosion of bankruptcy.

"A vintage of unparalleled desperation," Arthur remarked, lifting a chipped glass of lukewarm gin. His voice was a dry rattle, the sound of autumn leaves scraping against a tombstone.

Before them lay a platter of greyish, boiled offal and stale crusts—the remnants of a kitchen's indifference. Arthur looked at the meal with a flicker of his old theatricality. "Behold, Julian! We dine tonight upon the 'Liver of the Fallen Empire'. Note the subtle notes of systemic collapse and the lingering aftertaste of a lost inheritance."

Julian let out a short, jagged laugh that turned into a coughing fit. He leaned back against the damp wooden wall, staring at the frost creeping across the windowpane. "And the bread? Is that the 'Sourdough of Social Ostracism'?"

"Precisely," Arthur whispered, his gaze drifting to the door. "The menu is curated by the creditors, and the service is provided by the void."

For an hour, they played this game, renaming their misery with the vocabulary of the opulent. They transformed a piece of gristle into "The Marrow of Aristocratic Hubris" and a splash of vinegar into "The Tears of a Thousand Forgotten Debts". It was a fragile shield of wit, a desperate attempt to maintain the illusion of superiority while their stomachs groaned in protest.

As the fire in the small grate dwindled to a heap of white ash, Arthur stood. He approached the wall, where the condensation had frozen into a jagged mirror. With a piece of charcoal, he began to write. His hand trembled, the lines erratic and heavy.

*The river freezes, the heart turns stone,* *In the city of gold, we starve alone.* *The crown is rust, the scepter a lie,* *Under a leaden, indifferent sky.*

He stepped back, looking at the poem. It was not a work of art; it was a suicide note written in the language of a dead class.

"It is finished," Arthur said, his voice suddenly devoid of irony.

Julian didn't look up. He was watching a single drop of water freeze mid-fall from the ceiling. "Do you think they'll find us before the thaw, Arthur?"

"I hope not," Arthur replied, extinguishing the last candle. "I should hate for the world to see us in such a state of undress."

They sat in the gathering dark, two relics of a vanished world, waiting for the cold to finally claim the last of their breath.
