The Paperwork Purgatory

Act I: The Filing (20%) Mr. Higgins had spent thirty years in the Department of Civic Order, a building that was essentially a mountain of beige folders. He lived by the rule of the stamp. His world was a sequence of approved forms and denied petitions. Then came Lily. Lily had been detained in Room 402 for three weeks because she had checked "Both" in the gender column of Form 12-B, a mistake that the system viewed as a catastrophic logical error. She wasn't a criminal; she was a clerical anomaly.

Act II: The Process (30%) Higgins, moved by a sudden, inexplicable surge of empathy, decided to rescue Lily. But in the Department, "rescue" was a technical term requiring a specific sequence of authorizations. He began the process: Form 101 for "Intent to Assist," followed by Form 202 for "Verification of Anomaly." He spent days navigating the corridors of bureaucracy, fighting with Manager Stern, a man whose soul had been replaced by a handbook of procedures. Each time Higgins nearly reached Lily, a new requirement appeared: a notarized statement from a dead relative, a map of a city that no longer existed, a stamp that had been discontinued in 1954.

Act III: The Glitch (35%) The climax was a symphony of absurdity. Higgins had finally gathered the 114 required documents. He stood before Manager Stern, presenting the stack of paper with a trembling hand. Stern reviewed them with a magnifying glass, his face a mask of boredom. Just as he was about to sign the release, a small, unnoticed coffee stain landed on the third page of the 87th form. Stern paused. The stain, he noted, looked vaguely like a lowercase 'g', which changed the meaning of the sentence from "Release the subject" to "Re-evaluate the subject." The entire process was reset. Higgins collapsed into a chair, laughing hysterically. The system was not broken; it was working perfectly.

Act IV: The Exit (15%) The next morning, Higgins arrived at work to find Room 402 open. Lily was gone. She hadn't been released by a form; a server crash had simply wiped the database of all "anomalies," including her. She had been deleted from the system, and in doing so, she had become free. Higgins looked at his empty desk and his stacks of beige folders. He took his stamp, pressed it firmly onto his own forehead, and walked out of the building, leaving the paperwork to rot in the silence.
