The mansion stood at the edge of the village, its ancient walls bearing the weight of centuries. Master Li had lived there for sixty years, watching the seasons change through paper windows.

Every autumn, the maple trees shed their crimson leaves like drops of blood against the stone courtyard. The servants whispered that the house was haunted—not by ghosts, but by memories too heavy to release.

On the night of the harvest moon, Li received a visitor. A young scholar, barely twenty, with ink-stained fingers and hungry eyes. "I seek wisdom," the boy said. "They told me you possess the old texts."

Li studied the young man. In his eyes, he saw himself at that age—ambitious, impatient, blind to the cost of knowledge. "Come," Li said finally. "Let me show you what I have learned."

He led the scholar through corridors lined with scrolls, each one a lifetime of study. But as they walked, Li spoke not of wisdom, but of loss. His wife who died young. His son who left and never returned. The empire that rose and fell while he stayed here, reading.

"Why tell me this?" the scholar asked, confused.

"Because wisdom is not what you think it is," Li replied. "It is knowing which questions not to ask."

The scholar left at dawn, empty-handed but thoughtful. Li watched him go, then returned to his study. Outside, the maple leaves continued to fall, each one a small death in the long autumn of his remaining years.

Some questions have no answers. Some wisdom is knowing when to stop seeking.
