Spring came late that year, but when it arrived, it brought unexpected gifts.

Old Master Chen had given up on his family—had watched them crumble under the weight of their own expectations. But then his granddaughter, little Yun, asked him why the plum tree bloomed even when it was cold.

"Because," he told her, "it knows that winter is not forever."

That simple truth, spoken to a child, changed everything. Master Chen began to see his family not as a falling dynasty, but as seeds waiting for spring. His son, long estranged, returned not with apologies but with a new idea—a school for girls, something radical and hopeful.

The family didn't prosper in the old ways—they didn't regain their wealth or status. But they found something better: purpose. Yun's school flourished, and with it, a new kind of hope took root in the old garden.

It wasn't the redemption Master Chen had imagined. It was better.
