The house breathed. Cecilia knew this the way she knew her own pulse—through observation, measurement, and a refusal to accept that some things resist explanation.

She had been at Black River plantation for three weeks when she first noticed it. The floorboards in the master bedroom groved in a rhythm that did not match the wind. The walls were warm—not sun-warm, not heating-warm, but body-warm, the way a person's skin feels after they have been sitting in the sun too long. And at night, when the house settled and the servants had retired and the only sound was the delta humming outside, she could hear it: a low, regular vibration that came from somewhere deep within the structure, like a heartbeat transmitted through wood and brick and earth.

Cecilia is a woman of science. She studied anatomy at women's medical college in Philadelphia for two years before her family determined that a wife was a more useful investment than a physician. She knows that the human body contains approximately six trillion cells, that the heart beats sixty to one hundred times per minute, and that a decomposing body passes through five distinct stages. She applied this knowledge to Black River. She measured wall temperatures at three-hour intervals. She timed the floorboard vibrations with a stopwatch. She concluded that the house was not alive.

She did not stop hearing it at night.
