The Blackwoods' bookshop on Covent Garden is a small, warm place in a cold city. Henry fills it with books he cannot afford. Charlotte fills it with the quiet dignity of a woman who has learned to make peace with her circumstances.

On a November evening, Henry returns from the Albion Tavern drunk. Charlotte confronts him about his drinking—about the missed dinners, the forgotten rent, the way he looks at other women when he thinks no one is watching.

Henry, drunk and defensive, says: "You want to leave? Go ahead. I'll sell the shop for fifteen guineas and follow you. Or better yet, I'll sell you for fifteen guineas and buy a one-way ticket to somewhere you'll never find me."

It is a terrible thing to say. It is also, in Henry's mind, just a thing to say—a weapon wielded in anger, not a plan formed in malice. But words, once spoken, have a life of their own.

Charlotte packs a bag. She leaves without another word. She goes to her brother's house in Southwark.

That night, Silas Green breaks into the shop. Henry, who stayed behind to close up, wakes him. A struggle. Silas strikes Henry with a heavy brass book clamp. Henry falls. Silas takes fifteen guineas from the cash box—the money Henry had been saving to send Charlotte to the seaside for the winter.

The next morning, Charlotte returns. She finds Henry dead. She screams.

Seamus O'Connor is seen near the shop. He has fifteen guineas. He is Irish. Inspector Reed does not need more evidence than that.

Seamus is arrested. He is interrogated by Reed, a man whose belief in his own justice is as unshakeable as his belief in the superiority of the English race. Seamus's Irish accent makes him sound guilty even when he speaks the truth.

He is tried, convicted, and sentenced to transportation to Australia.

But Charlotte does not remain silent. She becomes the investigator. She visits every place Seamus mentioned—the lodging house in Limehouse, the pub in Drury Lane, the bookbinder's shop in Mayfair. She pieces together the truth not through legal process but through the quiet, relentless determination of a woman who has nothing left to lose.

She discovers Silas Green at a gambling house in Seven Dials. She follows him. She learns his habits. She waits.

She does not confront him with evidence. She confronts him with a different kind of weapon—she tells him that she knows what he did, and that she will tell everyone, starting with the police, unless he confesses.

Silas, a coward at heart, confesses.

Charlotte takes his confession to Inspector Reed. Reed, whose pride is as rigid as his morality, is forced to admit his error. Seamus is released. He boards a ship to Australia three days later. He does not say goodbye to Charlotte. He cannot bear to.

The story ends with Charlotte standing alone in the bookshop. Henry's books line the shelves. She opens one at random and reads: "A word spoken in anger is a seed planted in sorrow. It may lie dormant for years, but it will grow."

She closes the book. She locks the door. She walks out into the London fog, and this time, she does not look back.
