(Style: New York Urbanism)

In Manhattan, the only thing that matters is the leverage.

I’m eleven, and I own three blocks of the Upper East Side, a functioning laundromat, and the only working vending machine in Midtown. My name is Marcus, and in the New York of the Silence, I am the man who knows where the sugar is.

The adults left us a city of glass and steel, but they forgot to leave the keys to the pantry. Within six months, the "Good Play World" became a joke. You can't eat a playground, and you can't trade a comic book for a gallon of clean water. The children who survived weren't the ones who could climb the highest monkey bars; they were the ones who understood the spread.

My empire is built on a simple truth: scarcity creates value.

I don't use money. Money is just paper for the dead. I use "Credits"—small, colorful pieces of plastic from a defunct toy store. One Credit gets you a can of peaches. Ten Credits get you a night in a secure apartment with a working lock. A hundred Credits get you a seat at my table.

My office is the penthouse of a luxury hotel. I sit in a leather chair that swallows me whole, wearing a silk tie I found in a closet. I don't play. I negotiate.

"Marcus," the boy from the Bronx says, leaning over my desk. He’s thirteen, scarred, and smells like old rain. "My people are starving. We have the fuel, but we need the medicine from the pharmacy on 5th."

I lean back, clicking a pen. "The pharmacy is under the control of the 'Preppies' from the private school. They want three crates of chocolate bars for the antibiotics. I can get you the chocolate, but the price is the fuel. All of it. For a month."

He scowls. "That's a robbery."

"No," I smile, and it's a cold, adult smile. "That's the market. You're not paying for the chocolate, you're paying for the access. Take it or leave it."

He takes it. They always do.

The other kids think I'm a monster. They talk about "community" and "sharing" in their little camps in Central Park. They think we can go back to being children. But I've seen the way they look at the food. I've seen the way the "leaders" of those camps take the biggest portions for themselves.

The only difference between my penthouse and their camp is that I'm honest about the cost.

I remember the day the Silence happened. I was in a math class, staring at a graph of exponential growth. I remember the teacher suddenly collapsing, his face hitting the desk with a dull thud. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just looked at the graph and realized that the line had finally hit the ceiling.

The world didn't end; it just reset. The rules changed from "do your homework" to "control the resource."

As I look out over the skyline, I see the smoke rising from the slums. I see the children fighting over a discarded bag of chips. I feel a flicker of something—pity, perhaps—but I quickly extinguish it. Pity is a luxury I can't afford.

In this city, you are either the trader or the trade. And I intend to keep the house.
