Variant V-12: The Geometry of Futility

The apartment was a white box in a city of grey. Arthur lived there with his daughter, Maya. Maya had a lung condition. She breathed through a machine. The machine made a sound: *hiss, click, hiss, click*.

Arthur was a mathematician. He believed that everything in the universe could be reduced to a geometric proof. He believed that suffering was simply a variable that had not yet been solved.

He spent his days at the university, teaching calculus to students who didn't care. He spent his nights in the apartment, mapping Maya's breathing patterns on a chalkboard.

He created a graph. The X-axis was time. The Y-axis was oxygen saturation. He looked for the pattern. He looked for the symmetry. He believed that if he could find the exact geometric center of her illness, he could apply a counter-force and neutralize it.

"Look, Maya," he would say, pointing to a curve on the board. "This is where the instability begins. If we can shift the angle by three degrees, the flow will stabilize."

Maya would look at the board and then at her father. She didn't care about the angle. She cared about the way the light hit the dust motes in the afternoon. She cared about the sound of the rain on the window.

Arthur's obsession grew. He stopped eating. He stopped sleeping. He began to see the world as a series of intersecting lines and vectors. He saw the city as a flawed equation. He saw his own life as a rounding error.

He spent his savings on a specialized ventilator from Germany. It was a masterpiece of precision engineering. It didn't just breathe for Maya; it breathed with a mathematical perfection that was almost frightening.

For a month, the graph was a straight line. Maya's saturation was perfect. The symmetry was achieved. Arthur felt a surge of cold, intellectual triumph. He had solved the variable.

Then, the machine broke.

It wasn't a dramatic failure. A single seal had perished. A tiny leak of air. A deviation of 0.1%.

The symmetry collapsed. The graph plummeted. Maya began to struggle for air, her chest heaving in a jagged, asymmetrical rhythm.

Arthur panicked. He tried to fix the seal with tape and glue. He tried to recalculate the flow. He screamed at the machine, as if the laws of physics would bend to his will.

But the machine didn't care about his proofs. The air continued to leak.

Maya died in the space between two breaths.

Arthur sat on the floor, surrounded by his chalkboards and his graphs. He looked at the straight line of the previous month and then at the jagged drop of the final minute.

He realized the flaw in his logic. He had treated Maya as a geometric point, a variable in an equation. He had forgotten that she was a biological entity, a creature of chaos and fragility. He had sought symmetry in a universe that is fundamentally asymmetrical.

He didn't cry. He simply picked up the eraser and wiped the chalkboard clean.

He spent the rest of his life in the white box. He didn't teach math anymore. He didn't draw graphs. He just sat in the silence, listening to the ghost of a *hiss-click*, realizing that the only true proof of existence is the one that cannot be calculated.
