(Variation V-12: Gothic Horror)

The valley of Oakhaven was a place where the trees grew crooked and the birds forgot how to sing. In the center of the valley sat the forge of Alistair Thorne, a man whose weapons were sought by the most desperate and the most depraved.

Alistair's blades were beautiful. They had a fluid, organic quality, as if they were made of frozen silk rather than steel. But they came with a price. Every weapon Alistair forged required a "Tithe of Emotion."

To forge a sword of courage, the client had to surrender their ability to feel fear. To forge a blade of passion, they had to give up their capacity for calm.

Alistair himself had long ago become a void. He had forged so many weapons, surrendered so many emotions, that he was now a living sculpture of indifference. He didn't feel joy, pain, or love. He only felt the hunger of the metal.

One day, a young woman named Elena came to him. She didn't want a weapon to kill; she wanted a blade that could "cut through grief." She had lost her entire family in a fire and could no longer bear the weight of her sorrow.

Alistair looked at her and felt a flicker of something—not pity, but curiosity. He agreed to forge the blade, but the price was steep: Elena had to surrender her ability to feel hope.

For forty days, Alistair worked. He used a metal that shimmered with a ghostly pale light, folding it a thousand times in a fire fed by dried hemlock and nightshade. As the blade took shape, Elena grew colder. The light left her eyes, replaced by a flat, grey emptiness.

The sword was finished. It was a masterpiece of poetic horror—a blade that looked like a frozen tear.

Elena took the sword and sliced through the air. As she did, the crushing weight of her grief vanished. She felt nothing. No pain, no longing, no memory of the love she had lost. She was finally free.

But as she looked at Alistair, she realized the horror of her trade. She didn't just lose her grief; she had lost the part of herself that made the grief meaningful. She was now just like the Smith—a beautiful, empty shell.

Alistair watched her leave, and for the first time in decades, he felt a single, cold tear roll down his cheek. He didn't know why he was crying; he had forgotten what sadness felt like. He only knew that the valley of Oakhaven had claimed another soul.
