Title: The Sisyphus Voyage

The city of Aethelgard did not exist on a planet. It was a colossal ring of steel and neon, drifting through the Great Void, propelled by a singular, thundering engine that had been running for ten thousand years.

Kael was a Grade-4 Engineer, a man whose entire existence was defined by the rhythm of the pistons. His life was a sequence of checks: oil pressure, thermal vents, magnetic couplings. He lived in a world of grey corridors and the smell of ozone.

The citizens of Aethelgard were born into the Voyage. They were told that they were searching for the "Origin"—the mythical point of light from which the universe had begun. Every generation worked to keep the engine running, driven by the promise that one day, the sirens would wail, the engines would stop, and they would step out into the warmth of a real sun.

One day, while calibrating the long-range sensors, Kael found a ghost in the data.

He discovered a series of ancient logs, buried under layers of corrupted code. The logs were from the First Engineers. They revealed a truth that had been erased from the history books: Aethelgard had reached the Origin three thousand years ago.

The Origin was not a sun. It was a void. A perfect, empty vacuum where nothing existed.

The First Engineers had realized that there was nowhere to go. There was no paradise, no home, no end to the journey. But they also realized that the people of the city could not survive the truth. Without the Voyage, the society would collapse into a collective suicide.

So, they had programmed the engine to keep running. They had created a perpetual motion machine of hope.

Kael stood in the engine room, the roar of the pistons vibrating in his marrow. He looked at the thousands of workers around him, their faces etched with a grim, determined faith. They were working themselves to death to reach a destination that didn't exist.

He tried to tell his supervisor. He tried to leak the data to the Council. But the response was always the same: a blank stare, a polite smile, and a suggestion that he take a few days of "mental health leave."

The system had become self-sustaining. The belief in the Voyage was now more important than the Voyage itself. The engine was no longer a means of transport; it was a religion.

Kael returned to his station. He picked up his wrench and began to tighten a bolt on the primary coupling. He looked at the sensor screen, seeing the void stretching out infinitely in every direction.

He realized that he was not a traveler. He was a prisoner of a beautiful, thundering lie. And as he listened to the heartbeat of the city, he felt a strange, cold peace.

He would keep the engine running. Not because he believed in the Origin, but because the rhythm was the only thing that kept the silence of the void from screaming.
