Title: The Transparent Madness

In the city of Verity, the concept of a "secret" was considered a primitive relic, like the steam engine or the plague. Every citizen was equipped with a "Halo"—a neural interface that projected their current subconscious state as a shimmering, color-coded aura above their head.

Blue meant calm; red meant anger; a jagged, pulsing yellow meant lust. There was no lying in Verity. You couldn't tell your boss you were working hard while you were daydreaming about the beach; your Halo would betray you in a vivid, pulsing turquoise.

Leo was a "Void." A glitch in the genetic lottery had left him without a Halo. To the people of Verity, he was a terrifying enigma—a man with a blank space where his soul should be.

At first, Leo loved his silence. He was the only man in the city who could think a treasonous thought and keep it. But as the years passed, he realized the horror of the Halo.

The people of Verity were not honest; they were exhausted. They spent every waking second trying to "curate" their subconscious, fighting their own instincts to avoid the social stigma of a "dirty" aura. The city was a pressure cooker of suppressed emotions, a society of people who were terrified of their own minds.

One Tuesday, the system glitched.

For ten seconds, every Halo in the city shifted from the curated "social" mode to the "raw" mode. For ten seconds, the hidden filth, the secret hatreds, the repressed traumas, and the jagged edges of human desire were projected for all to see.

The result was not a sudden wave of honesty, but a collective psychic collapse.

People looked at their spouses and saw a pulsing, obsidian void of resentment. They looked at their children and saw a flicker of cold indifference. The social fabric, held together by the illusion of shared transparency, tore apart in an instant.

The streets of Verity became a battlefield of screams. People began to claw at their own heads, trying to rip the Halos out of their skulls. They couldn't handle the weight of the truth—not the truth of others, but the truth of themselves.

Leo walked through the chaos, the only man whose head remained clear. He saw a woman sobbing on the sidewalk, her Halo a chaotic storm of grey and violet. He knelt beside her and whispered, "Close your eyes. Imagine a place where no one can see you."

"I can't," she wailed. "I can see everything! I can see that I hate him! I can see that I am a monster!"

"No," Leo said, his voice the only quiet thing in the city. "You're just human. The secret is the only thing that keeps us sane."

He realized then that the greatest gift he could give the people of Verity was not the truth, but the ability to lie.
