The Gospel of the Signal

The town of Oakhaven was a place of dust and devotion. In the heart of the valley, under the shadow of the Appalachians, the people lived by the word of Pastor John. John was a man of thunder and fire, a prophet who claimed to have received a direct line to the Divine.

The 'Divine' had arrived three years ago in the form of a silver cylinder that had fallen from the sky, crashing into the center of the town square. John had declared it the 'Ark of the New Covenant', a holy relic sent to guide the faithful to the Promised Land.

The cylinder didn't speak in words; it spoke in pulses of light and low-frequency hums. John interpreted these signals as commands. He told the townspeople that the world was being cleansed of the 'unworthy', and that only those who showed absolute devotion to the Signal would be saved.

Under John's guidance, Oakhaven became a fortress of faith. People gave up their possessions, their doubts, and their children to the church. They spent their days in prayer and their nights in ecstatic trances, all while the silver cylinder pulsed in the square.

"The Signal is our salvation!" John would scream from the pulpit, his eyes wide with a manic light. "Every prayer we send, every sacrifice we make, brings us closer to the Ascension!"

The townspeople didn't know that their prayers were not going to heaven. The cylinder was a beacon, an automated scout from a civilization that viewed biological life as a contaminant. Every 'prayer'—every focused burst of emotional energy and biological data—was simply a coordinate confirmation, a way for the scout to map the local population's density and psychological profile.

Pastor John knew. He had discovered the cylinder's true nature in the first month. He had seen the cold, mathematical logs of the alien machine. But he didn't care. The power was intoxicating. For the first time in his life, he was not a failed preacher in a dying town; he was the gatekeeper of the apocalypse.

He spent the next three years refining the 'rituals', ensuring the signal was as strong and clear as possible, effectively calling the executioner to their door.

The Ascension happened on a Sunday.

The entire town was gathered in the square, kneeling before the cylinder. They were singing a hymn of praise, their voices rising in a crescendo of hope. Pastor John stood at the center, his arms raised, a triumphant smile on his face.

"Look up!" he shouted. "The gates of heaven are opening!"

The people looked up. They didn't see angels. They saw a single, infinitesimal point of light in the blue sky. The point expanded with impossible speed, turning the sky into a blinding, sterile white.

There was no pain. There was no sound. In a fraction of a second, the town of Oakhaven, the valley, and the mountains were simply erased. They weren't killed; they were 'un-existed', their atoms disassembled to make room for a more efficient form of matter.

The last thing Pastor John saw was the silver cylinder, pulsing one final time. It was a signal of completion. The map was finished. The sector was clean.

The silence that followed was absolute, a perfect, holy void.
