The Last Witness of the Empire

The city of Oros was a monument to a dying god. Its spires reached for a sky that had turned the color of a bruised plum, and its streets were filled with the echoes of a thousand years of arrogance. I had been the High Inquisitor of the Empire, the man who defined what was heresy and what was truth.

But the Empire had a way of eating its own.

When the Great Schism tore the capital apart, I was the first to be branded a traitor. My titles were stripped, my estates burned, and I was cast into the Abyss Tower—a place where the wind howls in the voices of the forgotten.

I spent a decade in the dark, until he found me.

Kaelen was a prisoner of a different sort. He was a philosopher of the Void, a man who had been imprisoned for suggesting that the Empire's "Eternal Truth" was merely a convenient lie. He lived in the cell adjacent to mine, and for years, our only connection was the sound of our voices through the stone wall.

“You are mourning a crown of thorns, Inquisitor,” Kaelen would say, his voice a low, resonant chime. “You believe you were betrayed by the Empire. But the Empire is not a person. It is a machine. You cannot be betrayed by a machine; you can only be processed by it.”

Kaelen didn't offer me comfort; he offered me a perspective. He taught me to see the Empire not as a divine order, but as a fragile construction of fear and habit. He showed me that my own "justice" had been nothing more than a tool for the Emperor's convenience.

As the years passed, my hatred for the Empire evolved into a cold, analytical curiosity. I began to see the cracks in the walls, the rot in the foundations. I realized that the Empire wasn't just failing; it was already dead. It was merely a corpse that hadn't realized it had stopped breathing.

Then, the walls of the Abyss Tower finally crumbled.

A peasant revolt, fueled by a century of starvation and desperation, stormed the tower. The guards were slaughtered, and the cells were thrown open.

I stepped out into the light of a burning city. The air was thick with the smell of smoke and blood. I saw the banners of the Empire being torn down and trampled into the mud.

Kaelen stood beside me, his eyes reflecting the orange glow of the fires.

“The cycle is complete,” he whispered. “The lie has been exposed. Now, the real work begins.”

I looked at the ruins of the city I had once served. I felt no joy, no triumph. I only felt a profound, echoing silence. I had spent my life protecting a lie, and in the end, the truth had come for us all.

I didn't try to rebuild. I didn't try to lead the rebels. I simply walked away from the burning city, Kaelen by my side, two ghosts wandering through the wreckage of a world that had finally stopped pretending.
