The Infinite Echo

The silence of the void was not empty; it was heavy. It pressed against the hull of the Ark like a physical weight, a cold, suffocating blanket that drowned out the screams of the dying.

Captain Thorne had been in command for twenty years, though time had lost all meaning in the perpetual twilight of the drift. His mission was simple: lead the last remnants of humanity to the Proxima Reach. But as the years stretched into decades, Thorne began to notice the "glitches."

First, it was the dreams. He would wake up in a bed he didn't recognize, in a house with a garden and a sun that didn't flicker. Then, he started seeing people in the corridors—people who had died centuries ago, walking with a slow, rhythmic grace, their faces blurred like smudged charcoal.

"The crew is hallucinating," the Chief Medical Officer told him, her voice trembling. "It's the isolation. The mind creates patterns where there are none."

But Thorne knew it wasn't a hallucination. He had found the "Black Box"—the original flight recorder from the first day of the Drift. He spent months decrypting the files, his obsession growing until he stopped eating and sleeping.

The truth was a jagged blade. The Proxima Reach didn't exist. It had been a fabrication, a mathematical error that had been promoted to a national truth to prevent a global suicide pact. The universe was a dead place, a frozen wasteland of cinder and ash. There was no new sun, no green pastures, no hope.

Thorne didn't tell the crew. He couldn't. He watched them work, watched them hope, watched them plan for a future that was a lie. He became the curator of a grand delusion, the shepherd of a flock walking toward a cliff.

The psychological toll began to fracture his mind. He started talking to the ghosts, asking them how it felt to be gone. He began to suspect that the Ark was not moving at all, but was merely a stationary tomb, and that the "stars" they saw through the viewports were just projections on a screen.

One night, Thorne entered the Engine Room. He saw the Great Engine, the heart of their world, and realized it wasn't pushing them forward. It was merely recycling the same few miles of space, looping them in a cosmic circle, a hamster wheel of existence.

He looked at the controls and saw a single, red button labeled "Terminal Exit."

He thought of the thousands of people sleeping in the cryo-pods, dreaming of a new world. He thought of the children who had never seen a real sky. And then, he thought of the silence.

Thorne smiled, a thin, broken expression. He realized that the only way to save humanity was to finally let them die.

He pressed the button, and for the first time in centuries, the Ark stopped humming. The silence that followed was the only truth left in the universe.
