The Neon Grave

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just smeared the neon lights across the asphalt like wet paint. I sat in my office, the air thick with the smell of stale cigarettes and cheap bourbon. My name is Jack Marlowe, and I used to be a cop. Now, I'm just a man who finds things that people want to stay lost.

I was hired by a man named Sterling—a "philanthropist" who lived in a fortress of glass and steel in the hills. He wanted me to find a man named Julian Vane. Vane was a ghost, a former intelligence officer who had disappeared into the city's underbelly, taking with him a set of codes that could crash the city's power grid.

I found Vane in a windowless room in a basement in Koreatown. He wasn't hiding; he was waiting. He was chained to a chair, but he looked like the one in control. He didn't beg for mercy. He didn't even look surprised to see me.

"You're late, Jack," Vane said, his voice a dry rasp. "I expected you three days ago. Sterling's desperation is showing."

Over the next week, Vane played a game with me. He didn't offer me money or power. He offered me the truth. He showed me that Sterling wasn't looking for codes; he was looking for a way to erase the evidence of a massacre he had ordered ten years ago. He showed me that the "justice" I had served as a cop was just a script written by men like Sterling.

"The world is a slaughterhouse, Jack," Vane whispered. "The only difference between the butcher and the meat is who holds the knife."

The climax came on a night when the city was screaming with a heatwave. Sterling came for Vane himself, bringing a team of mercenaries. He didn't want the codes anymore; he wanted the witness dead.

I had a choice: hand over the man who had dismantled my soul, or protect the monster who had taught me how to see.

I chose the monster.

In the ensuing gunfight, the basement became a tomb. I watched as Sterling's men were picked off one by one, not by bullets, but by the traps Vane had spent months preparing. When it was just me and Sterling left, I didn't arrest him. I didn't even shoot him. I just stood there and watched as Vane, now free from his chains, walked up to him with a surgical precision that was almost beautiful.

As the sun rose over the smog-choked horizon, I walked out of the building. I didn't call it in. I didn't report the bodies.

I went back to my office, poured a glass of bourbon, and looked at my badge, which I had kept in a drawer for five years. I picked it up and dropped it into the trash.

The city was still raining, the neon was still flickering, and for the first time in my life, I felt completely and utterly empty. And in that emptiness, I finally found some peace.
