The Shadow of the Titan

I remember the day the sky closed.

We were in the middle of the Great Harvest, gathering the dew-crystals from the edges of the Rust-Plains. Then, a shadow fell over us. It wasn't a cloud, and it wasn't an eclipse. It was a shape—a vast, undulating mass of flesh and fabric that blocked out the pale sun.

The elders called him The Titan.

He descended like a falling mountain, his landing triggering a seismic event that leveled three of our outer districts. We didn't run; we couldn't. We stood frozen, staring up at the entity that defied every law of our physics. His eye, a swirling nebula of brown and gold, was larger than our entire capital city. When he blinked, it felt like a curtain falling over the world.

I was the only one brave—or stupid—enough to approach the landing site. I climbed the ridges of his boot, a mountain of weathered leather and salt, until I reached the plateau of his ankle.

"Who are you?" I screamed, though I knew my voice was nothing more than a gnat's buzz to him.

The Titan did not answer. He simply sat down, and the impact sent a shockwave that threw me back a hundred meters. He began to weep. The tears were not drops; they were floods. A single sob from the Titan created a river that carved a new canyon through our valley, sweeping away a thousand homes in a matter of seconds.

We spent years studying him. We built shrines at the base of his fingers. We believed he was a god of sorrow, sent to punish us for some forgotten sin of the Macro-Era. We watched him sleep for decades, his breathing creating windstorms that we used to power our turbines.

But one day, I found a fragment of his skin—a flake of dead epidermis that had fallen during a storm. I placed it under the Great Lens and saw something that broke my heart.

Within the cells of the Titan, I saw the same patterns we had in our own. The same spirals of DNA, the same fragile machinery of life. He wasn't a god. He wasn't a monster.

He was just a man. A very, very lonely man.

And as I looked up at the sleeping giant, I realized the most terrifying truth of all: we were not the successors of humanity. We were just the parasites living in the shadow of its last, dying breath.
