The Ledger of the Iron Void

The rain in the Iron Void isn't water; it's a synthetic lubricant that smells of ozone and old blood. It streaks the neon signs of the Lower District in iridescent smears, turning the city into a blurred painting of misery.

I am an Eraser. My job is simple: I find the 'inefficient'—the sick, the old, the broken—and I process them. I don't use a gun; I use a terminal. I delete their access codes, shut off their oxygen credits, and watch as they fade into the grey mist of the vents. It's a clean business. No blood, just a flickering screen and a 'Confirmation' button.

I lived in a world of numbers. The Iron Void was a city-ship, a gargantuan slab of metal drifting through the dark. We were told we were sailing toward the Zenith, a world of gold and light. That was the Promise. The Promise was the only thing that kept the riots from breaking out in the slums.

I believed in the Promise. I believed that by erasing the weak, I was saving the strong. I was a patriot of the Void.

Then I found the file.

It was a corrupted data-log from a previous Eraser, a man who had disappeared ten years ago. He hadn't been erased; he had been murdered. In his logs, there were coordinates, sensor readings, and a single, devastating sentence:

'The Zenith is a ghost.'

I spent three months hacking into the core archives, risking my life with every keystroke. I found the truth buried under layers of encrypted lies. The Zenith had been destroyed five centuries ago by a supernova. The ship wasn't sailing toward a destination; it was just drifting in a circle, a giant, metal coffin.

The High Command knew. They had known for generations. But they realized that a population with a goal is easier to control than a population with the truth. The Promise was not a destination; it was a leash.

I sat in my office, the neon light of a 'Hope' billboard flickering outside my window. I looked at the list of people I was supposed to erase tomorrow. A mother and her child. An old man who used to be a teacher.

I felt a sudden, violent surge of nausea. Every person I had deleted, every life I had snuffed out, had been done in the name of a lie. I wasn't a savior; I was a janitor for a graveyard.

I didn't report the file. I didn't try to start a revolution. I knew how this story ended. In the Iron Void, the truth doesn't set you free; it just makes the erasure faster.

I opened my own terminal. I looked at my name, my ID, my credits. I felt a strange sense of peace.

I clicked 'Delete.'

As the oxygen in my room began to hiss away, I watched the synthetic rain fall against the glass. It was beautiful, in a way. A perfect, artificial lie.
