The Long Walk of the Last Ember

The Exodus began with a scream and ended with a prayer. When the Devourer first appeared in the Sol system, humanity did not unite in peace; they united in terror. They built the Ark-Fleet, a chain of ten thousand ships, and fled into the void.

The journey lasted four hundred years.

I am Captain Elias of the 402nd Generation Ship, the *Sisyphus*. I was born in the corridors of the fleet, and I will die in them. My world is a series of hydroponic gardens, recycled air, and the constant, low-frequency hum of the warp-drive.

The Devourer followed us. It didn't chase us with speed, but with patience. It was a slow, inevitable tide of iron and hunger. Every few decades, the fleet would lose a ship—a mechanical failure, a civil war, or a sudden "glitch" in the navigation. We called it the "Tithe." The Devourer didn't need to catch us; it just waited for us to fall apart.

The struggle changed us. We forgot the blue of the ocean and the green of the forests. We developed a religion of the Engine, believing that the only way to survive was to become more like the Devourer—colder, harder, more efficient. We stopped having art; we stopped having poetry. We became a species of engineers, calculating the exact calorie count of every breath.

But in the lower decks of the *Sisyphus*, a secret society existed: The Remembrancers. They kept forbidden books, hand-drawn maps of Earth, and recordings of birdsong. They believed that if we lost our humanity to survive, then there would be nothing left worth saving.

I was a Remembrancer. Every night, I read a page of *The Odyssey* to my crew, whispering about a home they had never seen.

The crisis came when the fleet reached the Edge of the Void. The Devourer had finally caught up. It didn't attack; it simply blocked the path, a wall of brass and fire that spanned a light-year. We were trapped.

The High Command ordered the "Purge"—the sacrifice of the slower ships to create a distraction for the rest to jump. It was a cold, mathematical decision.

I refused. I turned the *Sisyphus* around and broadcasted a signal to the entire fleet. Not a plea for help, but a recording of the birdsong. I told them that we were not just biological assets; we were the memory of a world.

The fleet didn't jump. For the first time in four centuries, the ships stopped. They turned toward each other, their lights blinking in a rhythmic, ancient pattern. They chose to face the void together, not as a fleet of survivors, but as a civilization.

We didn't win. The Devourer consumed us all in a single, sweeping motion. But as we were absorbed into the iron city, we didn't go silently. We sang. We sang the songs of Earth, the poems of the dead, and the laughter of children. We turned the Devourer's own internal network into a gallery of human memory.

The Devourer continued its journey, but it was changed. In the depths of its brass corridors, a ghost began to haunt the machines—a memory of a blue planet and a song that refused to be deleted.
