The Leverage of Nothing

The rain in New York doesn't wash things clean; it just turns the grime into a slick, black mirror. I'm Kane. I don't do "hits"; I do "liquidations." In my line of work, you don't look at the target's face; you look at their ledger.

The Shadow Cabinet—the kind of people who own the air you breathe and the dreams you have—came to me with a problem. The Interstellar Auditors were coming to balance the books of the human race. The migration terms were simple: the average wealth of the species determined the quality of the new world. If the bottom was too low, the whole species got downgraded to "Livestock" status.

The solution was a slaughter. Find the few who refused the handouts. Kill them. Raise the average.

I tracked the first one to a basement in Queens. A guy named Leo. He lived in a room that smelled of old books and cheap coffee. I put a million dollars in cash on his table. He didn't even blink.

"I don't want your money, Kane," Leo said, his voice like gravel. "I want you to realize that by offering it, you've already lost."

I didn't kill him. Not yet. I noticed something in Leo's eyes—not fear, but a calculation. He knew he was the glitch in the system. He knew that as long as he breathed, the Shadow Cabinet was sweating.

Within a week, Leo and the other "Refusers" had found each other. They didn't want a revolution; they wanted a ransom. They realized that their poverty was the only thing the rich couldn't buy. They started sending messages to the Cabinet: *One life for ten thousand refugees. One soul for a city's worth of medicine.*

The Cabinet panicked. They wanted me to wipe them out. But I've always had a problem with following orders when the orders are stupid. I started playing both sides, feeding the Cabinet lies about "resistance" while helping the Refusers build their leverage.

The night the Auditors arrived, the sky turned a cold, clinical white. The "balance" was being struck. I stood in the rain, watching the Cabinet members scream as they realized the Auditors didn't care about their bank accounts—they cared about the *will* to exist.

The Refusers were lifted first, not because they were rich, but because they were the only ones who hadn't been liquidated by their own greed. As for the Cabinet, they were downgraded. I watched them shrink, their expensive suits turning into rags, their voices becoming the bleating of sheep.

I lit a cigarette and walked away. I didn't take a dime. In a world where nothing has value, the only thing worth owning is the truth.
