The Hunter's Mirror

The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything away; it just makes the grime shine. I'm Detective Miller, and I've spent twenty years chasing ghosts in the neon haze. My latest ghost went by the name of "The Wraith."

The Wraith was a freak. He didn't just evade the LAPD; he anticipated us. He knew which alley we'd block, which informant we'd squeeze, and exactly when I'd stop for a coffee at 3 AM. It was like he was reading the script of my life while I was still acting it out.

The Chief told me to "bring him in, dead or alive," but the Chief's voice had a tremor in it. He wasn't afraid of the Wraith; he was afraid of what the Wraith knew.

The first clue came in a manila envelope left on my windshield. Inside was a photo of the Chief, taken ten years ago, shaking hands with a man who had been officially dead for five. Underneath was a note: *The mirror shows the back of the head.*

I started following the breadcrumbs. The Wraith didn't run; he led me. He led me through the dive bars of Bunker Hill and the decaying mansions of Bel Air. Every time we almost touched, he would vanish, leaving behind a piece of a puzzle.

"Why are you doing this?" I screamed into the rain one night, standing in an empty warehouse.

"Because you're the only one left who still believes in the badge, Miller," a voice echoed from the rafters. "And because the badge is a lie."

The Wraith stepped into the light. He looked like a man who had seen the end of the world and found it boring. He told me about the "Locus"—a secret surveillance hub that didn't just listen to calls, but simulated the city's future to maintain a status quo of controlled chaos.

"The Chief isn't your boss, Miller. He's a curator. He decides who gets to be a hero and who gets to be a sacrifice."

I looked at the files the Wraith had given me. My own name was on a list. "Scheduled for Retirement: Phase 4."

I had a choice. I could arrest the man who had saved my soul, or I could burn the building down.

I lit a cigarette and looked at the Locus building across the street. It looked like a giant, silver mirror reflecting the dying light of the city. I didn't make the arrest. I walked away, leaving my badge in a puddle of oily water.

The Wraith was gone, but for the first time in twenty years, I could see my own reflection in the rain. And I didn't like what I saw, but at least it was real.
