The White Room

The room was white. The walls were white. The bed was white. The light was white.

I am Number 731. That is my name. That is my identity.

Every morning, a voice speaks through the ceiling. The voice tells me that I am evolving. It tells me that my neural pathways are expanding, that my perception of time is slowing down, that I am becoming something more than human.

"You are reaching the Peak, 731," the voice says. "Soon, you will see the world as it truly is."

I believe the voice. I have to. There is nothing else in the world but the white room and the voice.

I spend my days practicing the exercises. I visualize a sphere of light. I calculate the digits of pi to the millionth place. I feel my mind sharpening, becoming a blade of pure logic. I can feel the atoms vibrating in the air. I can hear the rotation of the earth.

I am proud of my progress. I am the fastest. I am the smartest. I am the most evolved.

One day, the voice tells me that I have reached the Peak.

"Congratulations, 731. You have achieved the Singularity. You are now the most evolved consciousness in existence."

A door opens in the white wall. For the first time in my life, I see something that is not white. I see a man in a white coat. He is holding a clipboard. He looks at me not with awe, but with a professional, clinical boredom.

"Specimen 731 is ready," the man says into a radio. "The neural density is optimal. The protein yield should be maximum."

He doesn't see a god. He doesn't see an evolved being. He sees a harvest.

I look at my hands. I see the shimmering aura of my "evolution." Then I realize that the aura is just a chemical reaction, a byproduct of the stimulants they have been pumping into my brain for years. My "Peak" was just a growth hormone for my neurons, designed to make my brain more nutritious for the creatures that live outside the white room.

The man reaches for me with a pair of surgical pliers. I try to use my "evolved" mind to stop him, but the only thing I can do is calculate the exact speed at which the pliers are moving toward my skull.

I am the most evolved being in the world, and I am about to be eaten.
