The Collapse of Reason

The Great Blackout of 2032 was not a technical failure; it was a systemic surrender. In a single hour, the digital infrastructure of New York vanished. Bank accounts became zeros, security systems froze, and the invisible threads that held the city together snapped.

Marcus had been the Under-Secretary of Urban Stability. He was the man who knew where every pipe, wire, and secret was buried. In the first week of the collapse, while others were looting, Marcus began to build.

He used his knowledge of the city's hidden architecture to create a "Safe Zone" in the ruins of the Financial District. He provided food, water, and security. He did this not out of kindness, but because he believed that the collapse was an opportunity to implement the "Perfect Order"—a society based on absolute meritocracy and rational distribution.

"The old world failed because it was sentimental," Marcus told his followers. "The new world will succeed because it will be logical."

He established a strict hierarchy. Those who could provide technical skills were the elite; those who could only provide labor were the servants. He implemented a system of "Social Credits" based on contribution to the colony's survival. It was a masterpiece of administrative efficiency.

For six months, the Safe Zone was a miracle. It was the only place in the city where the lights still flickered and the water still ran. Marcus was worshipped as the savior of reason.

But the logic had a flaw. Marcus had forgotten that humans are not logical.

The "meritocracy" became a new form of tyranny. The elites began to hoard the best resources, not because they were more "meritorious," but because they controlled the credit system. The servants, driven by a hunger that logic could not satisfy, began to sabotage the infrastructure.

The collapse happened from the inside. A single act of desperation—a fire in the main server room—triggered a chain reaction. The "Perfect Order" vanished in a night of screaming and smoke.

Marcus stood in the ruins of his command center, watching his followers tear each other apart over a crate of canned peaches. He tried to use his voice, his logic, his "rational" arguments to stop the violence.

But the words meant nothing. The people didn't want logic; they wanted blood.

As the mob closed in on him, Marcus realized the final, brutal truth: power is not a structure you build; it is a ghost you chase. The more you try to codify it, the more fragile it becomes.

He didn't fight them. He sat on the floor of his ruined office and waited. As the first stone hit him, he felt a strange, liberating sensation. He was finally free from the burden of being right.
