The Weight of the Void

Frank stared at the coffee stain on his desk. It looked like a map of a country that didn't exist, a place where the air was clean and the people didn't lie for a living.

He was a mid-level manager in the City Planning Office, a job that consisted mostly of moving papers from the "In" tray to the "Out" tray while pretending that the process mattered. He had spent twenty years climbing this mountain, using every trick in the book. He had been the youngest manager in the department's history, a man of ambition and precision.

But the view from the top was just more beige.

He remembered the thrill of his first big win—a zoning change that had made him a hero in the eyes of the Mayor. He had felt a surge of power, a sense that he was finally in control of his destiny. Now, that memory felt like it belonged to someone else, a stranger who had believed in the possibility of meaning.

"Frank," his assistant said, leaning into the office. "The council meeting is in ten minutes. They want your report on the sewage overflow."

"Tell them I'm coming," Frank said. He didn't move.

He felt a profound exhaustion that went deeper than sleep. It was a spiritual fatigue, a realization that the power he had spent his life acquiring was just a different kind of emptiness. He had mastered the art of the climb, only to find that the mountain was a treadmill.

He looked at his reflection in the window. He saw a man with a receding hairline and a suit that cost more than his first car, but his eyes were hollow. He had traded his curiosity for a title, his passion for a pension, and his soul for a corner office with a view of a parking lot.

He wondered if there was a version of himself that had stayed at the bottom—a man who had remained a clerk, who had kept his integrity, who had spent his evenings reading books instead of analyzing political trends. Would that man be happier? Or would he just be a different kind of empty?

The intercom buzzed. "Mr. Henderson, they're waiting for you."

Frank stood up slowly. He adjusted his tie, a gesture of habit rather than pride. He walked out of the office and toward the meeting room, his footsteps heavy and rhythmic, like a funeral march for a man who was still alive.
