Title: The Shadow of the Manor

The Blackwood Manor did not sit upon the hill; it loomed over it, a skeletal remains of a dynasty that refused to die. I, Elias, had served as the head butler for forty years, a silent ghost in a house of whispers.

My master, Lord Julian, was a man of singular obsession. In the depths of the manor, in a laboratory that smelled of formaldehyde and old earth, he pursued the "Great Restoration." He believed that the decay of the flesh was a flaw that could be corrected.

I was the only one he trusted. I was the one who brought the "donors"—the young, the desperate, the forgotten children of the surrounding village who came to the manor seeking work and found only a cold, clinical end. I watched as Lord Julian transferred the vitality of the young into his own withered veins.

I did not stop him. I did not scream. I simply recorded.

In my leather-bound journal, I noted the exact date when Julian's eyes stopped looking human and began to resemble the milky depths of a dead fish. I recorded the way his skin became a translucent parchment, stretched tight over a frame that was no longer entirely organic. He was becoming something else—a parasite of time, a creature that fed on the future to preserve a rotting past.

"Do you see it, Elias?" he would whisper, his voice a dry rattle. "The victory over the grave!"

I would bow and reply, "Indeed, my Lord." But in my heart, I felt a profound disgust. He had not conquered death; he had merely postponed it by stealing the lives of others. He was a monument to greed, a living corpse held together by the stolen breath of innocents.

The end came on a night of torrential rain. A fire broke out in the lower laboratories—a chemical explosion that turned the basement into a furnace. I stood in the hallway, watching the orange glow climb the stairs. Lord Julian screamed for help, his voice sounding like tearing metal. He was trapped in his machinery, his body fused with the very devices that kept him alive.

I did not move. I simply closed my journal and walked out of the front doors. As the manor collapsed into a pyre of black smoke and gold, I felt a sudden, lightness in my chest. The debt was paid. The parasite was gone. I walked away into the rain, a free man in a world that was finally allowed to grow old.
