The Hunter's Remorse

The corridors of the Obsidian Spire were silent, save for the rhythmic click of High Inquisitor Valerius's boots. For a thousand years, the Empire of Sol had lived by a single, bloody axiom: *The first to strike is the only one to survive.* They were the apex predators of the galactic rim, erasing any signal of life they encountered before it could become a threat.

Valerius was the finest blade in the Empire's arsenal. He had extinguished a dozen worlds, always with the same cold efficiency. To him, the screams of a dying civilization were merely the sounds of a necessary hygiene.

Then came the planet Eos.

Eos was a primitive world, a blue-and-green marble inhabited by creatures who still believed in things like "altruism" and "universal peace." They had no weapons, no shields, and no concept of the Dark Forest. When Valerius landed, he expected a slaughter. Instead, he found a garden.

He spent a month in disguise, walking among them. He saw a father give his daughter a hand-carved wooden bird; he saw strangers sharing bread in the rain; he saw a society that functioned on trust rather than fear. For the first time in his life, Valerius felt the crushing weight of his own nature. He realized that the Empire's "survival" was not a triumph, but a slow, agonizing suicide of the soul.

He decided to protect them. He used his authority to scrub Eos from the imperial charts, reporting it as a dead rock. He spent years as their secret guardian, fighting off scavengers and hiding their signal. He believed he had found a way to break the cycle.

But the Empire's logic was absolute. The very act of "protecting" Eos created a statistical anomaly in the imperial data—a void where there should have been a report. This anomaly attracted the attention of the High Hegemon, who suspected Valerius of treason.

To punish the traitor and "cleanse" the anomaly, the Hegemon did not send an army. He sent a singular, compressed gravitational wave.

Valerius watched from the surface of Eos as the sky began to fold. He didn't try to escape. He stood in the town square, surrounded by the people who had taught him how to love, and held the hand of a child who didn't know why the stars were falling.

As the world collapsed into a single, infinite point of density, Valerius felt a strange sense of peace. He had spent his life as a hunter, but in the end, he died as a human.
