The Lonely Sovereign

The Citadel was a masterpiece of celestial architecture, a city of floating diamonds and singing crystals that drifted through the void of the Andromeda galaxy. Adrian was the Sovereign of the Citadel. Through a series of ruthless acquisitions and strategic betrayals, he had achieved the impossible: he had become the 'Ultimate Owner.'

Adrian owned every square inch of the Citadel. He owned the air the citizens breathed, the water they drank, and the very thoughts they thought, which were processed through a network of neural links he controlled. He had liquidated every competing interest until there was only one name on every deed in the galaxy.

For the first year, it was a dream. He lived in a palace of pure light, served by a thousand androids and a million devotees. He could reshape the city with a thought, turning a plaza into a forest or a mountain into a fountain of liquid gold.

But then, the silence began to set in.

Adrian realized that ownership is the death of relationship. When he looked at his consort, he didn't see a partner; he saw a high-value asset. When he spoke to his advisors, he didn't hear counsel; he heard the feedback of his own property.

He had erased the possibility of 'the other.' There was no one left to surprise him, no one to challenge him, and no one to love him, because love requires two separate entities, and Adrian had absorbed everything into himself.

He became a prisoner of his own omnipotence. He tried to create 'artificial' rivals, but they were just puppets dancing to his subconscious. He tried to give away his wealth, but the system he had built was so absolute that any gift was merely a transfer between different accounts of the same owner.

In the depths of his loneliness, Adrian began to crave pain. He would order the androids to inflict precise, agonizing wounds on his body, just to feel something that he hadn't planned. He wanted to be surprised by a scream, to feel the raw, uncurated terror of a mortal man.

One evening, he stood on the balcony of his palace, looking out at the cold, indifferent stars. He realized that the universe was the only thing he didn't own, and that was the only thing that still mattered.

He deactivated the neural links, releasing the consciousness of every citizen in the Citadel. In an instant, he ceased to be the Sovereign and became just a man in a very large, very empty house.

He lay down on the cold diamond floor and closed his eyes. As his heart slowed to a stop, he felt a flicker of genuine joy. He was finally losing everything, and in that loss, he was finally free.
