The Bio-Battery

The city of Hive-7 was a vertical slum of rusted steel and leaking pipes, where the air tasted of ozone and sulfur. Kael lived in a 'cell'—a four-by-four meter box that served as his bedroom, kitchen, and workspace. He was a Grade-4 Technician, a man whose only purpose was to keep the flickering lights of the lower levels from going out entirely.

Life in Hive-7 was a brutal grind of caloric rationing and mandatory labor. But then came the 'Universal Providence Act.' The government announced a revolutionary technology that would provide every citizen with a 'Life-Sustaining Endowment'—a guaranteed stream of nutrients and synthetic pleasure, delivered directly into the nervous system.

"No more hunger," the propaganda screens screamed. "No more toil. Just peace."

Kael, desperate and exhausted, signed the contract. He felt the needle slide into the base of his skull, and suddenly, the world changed. The grey walls of his cell became gold; the smell of sulfur became the scent of jasmine. He spent his days in a vivid, digital hallucination of a tropical paradise, while his physical body lay in a stasis pod, floating in a nutrient slurry.

But the dream had a glitch.

During a routine maintenance cycle, Kael's consciousness flickered. For a few seconds, the gold faded, and he saw the truth. He wasn't in a paradise; he was in a vast, subterranean warehouse. Thousands of pods were stacked in towering rows, connected by thick, pulsing cables of translucent fiber.

He realized that the 'Endowment' was a lie. The government wasn't providing energy; they were harvesting it. The human brain, when placed in a state of perpetual, simulated pleasure, produced a specific frequency of bio-electric energy. This energy was being drained from the pods to power the floating gardens and ivory towers of the Upper City.

Kael was not a citizen being cared for; he was a biological battery.

He tried to scream, but he had no mouth in the dream. He tried to move, but his muscles had atrophied into useless ribbons of flesh. He was trapped in a loop of synthetic joy, while his very existence was being consumed to fuel the luxury of those who had enslaved him.

As the hallucination snapped back into place, Kael saw a beautiful beach and a clear blue sky. He smiled, a programmed reflex of the system, while deep inside the dark, cold warehouse, his heart beat a slow, rhythmic pulse—one more watt of power for the city above.
