The Burden of the Crown
The mud of the valley was cold, and the air smelled of iron and old blood. Alaric, the Regent of the Iron Realm, stood on the ridge, looking down at the smoking ruins of the rebel capital. He had won. The rebellion that had threatened to tear the kingdom apart was over.
But the cost had been unspeakable.
To save the kingdom, Alaric had become a monster. He had burned villages to starve the rebel army. He had executed prisoners without trial to instill terror. He had betrayed his own allies to ensure a swift victory. He had done everything necessary to ensure that the young King, a boy of ten, would inherit a unified and peaceful realm.
"The people love you, Alaric," his general said, his voice devoid of emotion. "They call you the Iron Savior."
"They don't love me," Alaric replied, his voice a rasp. "They are terrified of me. There is a difference."
As the years passed, Alaric remained the power behind the throne. He continued to govern with a cold, surgical precision, removing any threat to the stability of the realm. He lived in a palace of silence, avoided by the court and feared by the peasantry.
He knew that history would not be kind to him. He had already seen the chronicles being written—the stories of the "Cruel Regent" and the "Bloody Purges." He didn't care. He had accepted the role of the villain because he knew that the alternative was the death of the kingdom.
One winter night, as he lay dying in his bed, the young King, now a man, came to visit him. The King looked at Alaric with a mixture of gratitude and horror.
"Why did you do it?" the King asked. "Why did you stain your soul so deeply for me?"
Alaric smiled, a ghost of a smile. "Because someone had to be the monster, so that you could be the saint. A kingdom cannot be built on kindness alone; it needs a foundation of blood."
The King wept, but Alaric felt only a profound sense of relief. He had carried the burden of the crown's darkness for twenty years, and now, finally, he could let it go.
He died in the early hours of the morning, alone in his room. The city outside celebrated the passing of the "Tyrant," unaware that their peace was the fruit of his cruelty.
Alaric's body was buried in an unmarked grave, far from the royal mausoleum. He had wanted it that way. He didn't want a monument to his crimes; he only wanted the kingdom to survive.
As the first snow of winter began to fall, covering the grave in a blanket of white, the realm remained stable, the borders secure, and the people safe. The monster was gone, and the saint remained.
