The Altar of Purity

The *Sorrow* drifted over the black plains of Earth like a funeral barge. I had come back expecting a sanctuary, but I found a temple of madness.

The Micro-City was a place of blinding, oppressive whiteness. There were no colors, no shadows, only a sterile, luminous glow that felt like a physical weight. The inhabitants didn't walk; they glided in a synchronized, rhythmic trance, their faces frozen in expressions of ecstatic purity.

"You are the Great Stain," the High Purifier told me. Her voice was a shimmering, discordant chord that vibrated in my very marrow. "You are the carrier of the Macro-Sin, the residue of the era of Greed and Mass."

In the Micro-City, survival had morphed into a religion of subtraction. They believed that the Great Flash was a divine cleansing, and that any remnant of the Macro-Era was a spiritual contagion. To them, the very concept of "size" was a moral failing. To be large was to be gluttonous; to be complex was to be corrupt.

I was not a guest; I was a patient. They confined me to a chamber of white light, where they performed "purifications" on my skin and mind. They used nano-acids to strip away my calluses, my scars, and eventually, my memories.

"We will make you pure," the Purifier whispered, her eyes wide and vacant. "We will peel away the layers of the Macro-World until only the crystalline essence remains."

I fought them at first. I screamed about the beauty of the mountains, the smell of the ocean, the complexity of human love. But my screams were just "noise" to them, a symptom of my infection.

Slowly, the resistance faded. The purifications began to feel... right. The removal of my memories felt like the lifting of a heavy, suffocating blanket. The emptiness they were creating inside me felt like a vast, open cathedral.

I began to crave the white light. I began to love the silence.

One morning, the High Purifier came to me with a shimmering, silver needle. "The final step," she announced. "The dissolution of the Ego."

I didn't flinch. I opened my arms and welcomed the needle. As the nano-agents flooded my bloodstream, I felt my consciousness begin to fragment, dissolving into a billion tiny, pure sparks. I felt my "I" evaporating, merging into the collective, humming consciousness of the city.

I was no longer a man. I was a note in a single, endless chord. I was a drop in a white ocean.

As my physical body collapsed into a pile of translucent ash, I felt a surge of absolute, blinding joy. I was finally pure. I was finally small. I was finally nothing.
