The Parasite of Poverty

The London of 1888 was a city of two souls: the glittering gold of the West End and the rotting blackness of the East. Elias was a man of the latter, though he dressed for the former. He was a "Collector," a man hired by the nobility to remove the "Social Blights"—those wretched souls who refused the meager crumbs of the parish grants.

Lord Sterling, a man whose skin was as pale as the marble of his estate, viewed poverty not as a lack of funds, but as a biological infection.

"It is a parasite, Elias," Sterling would whisper, his eyes wide with a manic intensity. "The Pure Poor—those who reject all help—are the zero-patients. Their poverty is a spiritual virus. If it is allowed to persist, it will infect the healthy tissues of the empire. We must excise the infection before the whole body rots."

Elias's tools were not just guns, but scalpels and chemicals. He didn't just kill; he "cleaned."

His final target was a woman who lived in a cellar beneath a tannery. She was a seamstress who had spent forty years sewing lace for the rich, yet she lived in a room that smelled of sulfur and old blood. She had refused every coin Sterling had offered, claiming that her poverty was the only thing that kept her soul honest.

When Elias entered the cellar, he felt a sudden, overwhelming sense of dread. The room was filled with mirrors—shattered, clouded, and ancient. In every reflection, he saw not himself, but a distorted version of the woman, her face melting into a mask of grey ash.

"You've come to cure me," the woman whispered, her voice like the scraping of a knife on bone.

Elias moved forward, his movements clinical and precise. But as he reached for her, he felt a coldness seep into his own skin. He looked down and saw a grey vein pulsing in his wrist.

"The parasite doesn't live in the money, Elias," the woman smiled, her teeth yellow and jagged. "It lives in the act of the erasure. Every time you kill one of us to 'save' the city, you take a piece of our void into yourself. You think you are the surgeon, but you are just the host."

Elias struck. The knife entered her heart with a sickening, wet thud. But as she died, she didn't scream. She exhaled a cloud of grey vapor that rushed into Elias's lungs.

He returned to Sterling's manor, but the world had changed. The gold of the chandeliers looked like dried bile. The silk of the curtains felt like spiderwebs. He looked at Sterling and saw not a nobleman, but a bloated, pale maggot feeding on the corpse of a city.

"Is it done?" Sterling asked, his voice sounding like it was coming from the bottom of a well.

Elias didn't answer. He looked into a mirror and saw that his own reflection was gone. In its place was a void—a grey, pulsing hole where a man should have been.

He realized that Sterling's "Purity" was the ultimate lie. The only thing that was pure in London was the poverty, and now, it lived inside him. He walked toward Sterling, the grey veins in his arms now glowing with a faint, sickly light.

"I've brought the cure, My Lord," Elias whispered, his voice now a chorus of a thousand dead voices. "And it's time for the whole house to be cleaned."
