The Seed of Lies

The rain in this city doesn't wash anything away; it just moves the filth from one alley to another. I'm Raymond Gray, a "cleaner." I don't scrub floors; I scrub history. When a corporation wants a failed project forgotten or a disgraced executive erased from the record, they call me. I find the evidence, and I make it disappear.

I've spent ten years in the grey, and I've learned one rule: everyone is selling something, and everything has a price.

Two weeks ago, a client with a voice like crushed velvet and a bank account like a small nation hired me for a "special recovery." He wanted the "Omega Seed"—a legendary data-chip from the era before the Collapse. The story goes that the Seed contains the blueprint for a new civilization, a way to reboot the world and end the endless smog and hunger.

I spent three weeks chasing ghosts through the neon slums and the rusted skeletons of the old docks. I fought through corporate mercenaries and navigated the labyrinths of the black market. I almost died twice, once by a blade in a rain-slicked alley and once by a dose of neurotoxin in a high-rise penthouse.

Finally, I found it. The Seed was hidden in the chest of a dead man who had been frozen in a block of industrial resin for fifty years.

I didn't hand it over immediately. I'm a cleaner, but I'm not a fool. I used a black-market deck to crack the encryption. I expected to find formulas, laws, a new constitution—something that could actually save the world.

Instead, I found a single, looping video file.

It was a recording of the last scientists of the Old World. They weren't talking about salvation. They were laughing. They explained that the "Collapse" wasn't an accident or a disaster; it was a design. They had discovered that human nature is fundamentally incompatible with stability. The only way to prevent total extinction was to trigger a controlled collapse, a permanent state of chaos that would keep the population fragmented and easy to manage.

The "Omega Seed" wasn't a blueprint for a new world. It was the manual for the current one. It was the proof that there is no "better way," only different ways to suffer.

I sat there in the dark, the blue light of the screen reflecting in the rain on my coat. I thought about the people in the slums, the ones who still believed in the legend of the Seed, the ones who prayed for a reboot.

I didn't give the chip to the client. I walked to the edge of the harbor and dropped it into the oily black water.

Some things are better left forgotten. And some lies are the only things keeping the world from screaming.
