The Carousel of Dust

The carnival had arrived in Oakhaven on a Tuesday, though no one could remember who had brought it. It was a collection of rusted trailers and faded tents, smelling of popcorn and wet dog. In the center stood the Carousel, a magnificent, decaying machine with wooden horses that looked as if they were screaming in slow motion.

The Ringmaster was a man of impossible proportions, wearing a top hat that seemed to touch the clouds and a coat the color of a bruised plum. He didn't speak so much as he performed his words, each sentence a theatrical flourish.

"Step right up!" he bellowed, his voice echoing across the dying town. "Witness the Great Flattening! See the world as it truly is—a beautiful, thin lie!"

Oakhaven was a town in the grip of a strange malaise. For months, people had been "slipping." It started with a finger, then a hand, then a whole limb. They didn't disappear; they just lost their depth. A man would wake up and find his left arm was now a flat image on his bedsheet, still functioning, still feeling, but devoid of volume.

Mabel was the star of the Carousel. She was a trapeze artist who had slipped entirely. She was now a living silhouette, a two-dimensional shadow that glided through the air with an eerie, effortless grace. She had no face, only a suggestion of a smile and eyes that looked like ink blots.

"It's a dance, Mabel," the Ringmaster whispered, leaning close to her. "The universe is just tired of being so thick. It wants to be a drawing. It wants to be a memory."

The townspeople gathered for the final show. They were a grotesque parade of the partially flattened—women with two-dimensional faces, children with flat torss. They watched with a mixture of horror and fascination as Mabel began her routine.

She leaped from the trapeze, and as she flew, she began to spin. As she spun, the air around her began to ripple. The Carousel accelerated, the music becoming a distorted, screeching waltz. Suddenly, the ripple expanded.

One by one, the spectators began to flicker. A woman's dress became a flat piece of fabric; a man's hat became a circle of felt on the ground. They didn't panic. They just looked at each other with a profound, exhausted acceptance.

"The show is over!" the Ringmaster shouted, his own body beginning to thin into a purple line.

With a final, thunderous chord, the Carousel vanished. The tents, the trailers, and the people of Oakhaven were all pressed into the soil, becoming a single, intricate layer of dust.

For a long time, there was only the wind blowing across the flat plain. Then, a single, two-dimensional horse, carved from a memory of wood, began to gallop across the horizon, forever chasing a sun that had no depth.
