The Crimson Veil

The mist over the Black Forest did not drift; it breathed. It was a thick, cloying crimson, smelling of iron and old roses, and it had not left the valley of Castle Valerius for a century. Inside the stone walls, the air was heavy with the scent of incense and decay.

Count Valerius stood in the center of his occult chamber, his eyes sunken and glowing with a feverish light. He was not looking at the world of men, but at the "Fold." Through a series of forbidden rituals and the sacrifice of his own sanity, he had discovered a way to slide the physical world along a hidden axis, folding space like a piece of velvet.

"Just a little further," he whispered, his voice a dry rattle. "The secret of eternity lies in the collapse."

In the corner of the room, Isabella sat bound in silver chains. She was the final ingredient—a soul of pure innocence, whose terror would act as the anchor for the Fold. As Valerius chanted the final syllables of the Crimson Litany, the room began to warp.

The walls didn't move; they shifted. The corners of the room ceased to be ninety degrees, becoming acute, then obtuse, then impossible. Isabella screamed, but the sound was distorted, stretching out into a long, metallic wail that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere.

Suddenly, the Fold snapped.

A tear opened in the center of the room, and from it emerged the "Things from the Crease." They were not creatures of flesh and bone, but geometric nightmares—jagged shards of obsidian and pulsing veins of light that existed in more than three dimensions. They didn't walk; they flickered, appearing and disappearing as they moved through the folds of the room.

Valerius laughed, a sound of pure triumph. "I have conquered death! I have opened the gate!"

But the gate did not just let things in; it began to pull everything out.

The floor beneath them began to ripple. The stone turned into a liquid, then into a series of flat, overlapping planes. Valerius felt his own body begin to stretch. His arm became a long, thin ribbon of flesh, winding around the room like a serpent. He tried to scream, but his mouth was now a thin line, a mere slit in his face.

Isabella's chains snapped as the silver itself became two-dimensional. She looked at the Count, and for a moment, they shared a look of absolute, mutual horror. They were no longer humans; they were becoming a painting of agony.

The crimson mist rushed into the room, filling every gap, every fold. The castle, the forest, and the screaming souls within were all pressed together into a single, infinitely thin layer of red glass.

When the sun rose the next morning, there was no castle. There was only a strange, red crystal embedded in the earth, a perfect, flat mirror that reflected a sky that no longer existed.
