The Absurdity of the Echo

The city was a grey smudge under a grey sky, a place where the clocks all ticked at different speeds and the people walked in circles, convinced they were going somewhere. Julian Thorne worked in the Department of Redundancy, where his sole job was to file reports that explained why the reports he had filed the previous day were no longer relevant.

His existence was a loop of beige walls and lukewarm coffee, until the day the telephone in his office rang. The voice on the other end claimed to be Julian, but a Julian from a future where the loop had finally broken.

"The loop is a lie, Julian," the voice said, sounding bored. "We aren't moving forward or backward. We are just a recording playing on a scratched disc. The 'Collision' isn't a disaster; it's the moment the needle finally jumps off the record."

The future-Julian told him that the only way to escape the loop was to perform an act of 'Absolute Irrelevance'—something so completely devoid of purpose or logic that the system could not categorize it.

Julian spent a month attempting various acts of absurdity. He wore his shoes on his hands; he spent eight hours a day staring at a single grain of salt; he wrote a novel consisting entirely of the word 'perhaps.' But the loop continued. He still woke up in the same grey room, still filed the same redundant reports.

He realized that his attempts at absurdity were still 'attempts'—they had a purpose (to escape), which made them relevant to the system.

The climax came during the annual Departmental Review. As the Director began to read Julian's performance evaluation, Julian didn't argue, didn't cry, and didn't try to escape. Instead, he simply stopped. He stopped thinking, stopped wanting, and stopped existing as a 'person' with a goal. He became a void.

In that moment of absolute indifference, the world around him began to flicker. The beige walls dissolved into static. The Director's voice became a series of meaningless clicks. The loop, unable to find a hook to hold onto, simply snapped.

Julian found himself standing in a white void, facing the other version of himself.

"Welcome to the silence," the future-Julian said. "There is nothing here. No purpose, no destiny, no meaning. It's absolutely terrifying."

Julian looked around at the infinite whiteness. He felt a sudden, overwhelming sense of relief. For the first time in his life, he didn't have to be anything. He didn't have to file a report. He didn't have to be relevant.

He sat down in the nothingness and closed his eyes, finally happy to be absolutely, perfectly useless.
