The Parasite's Gift

The rain in the city didn't fall; it clung. It was a grey, oily substance that smeared the neon signs of the Lower East Side into blurred streaks of magenta and bile. Detective Miller sat in his car, the smell of stale cigarettes and cheap bourbon filling the cabin. He was staring at a photograph of a woman who had ceased to exist three days ago.

She hadn't died. She had simply... optimized.

"Another one, Miller," his partner, Vance, said over the radio. "Found a guy in a penthouse in Midtown. Same thing. Skin like polished marble, eyes like silver mirrors. No heartbeat, but he's still talking. He's reciting prime numbers in a language that makes the forensics team vomit."

Miller sighed and put the car in gear. For six months, the city had been gripped by the 'Ascension'. A series of sudden, miraculous breakthroughs in biotechnology had cured cancer, erased dementia, and promised eternal youth. The world had hailed it as a new Golden Age.

But Miller had seen the basement of the clinics. He had seen the way the 'Ascended' looked at the 'Unchanged'—not with pity, but with the hunger of a predator looking at a slow-moving prey.

He entered the penthouse. The man on the floor was beautiful, terrifyingly so. His skin was translucent, revealing a network of glowing, iridescent filaments where veins should have been.

"It's a gift, Detective," the man whispered, his voice sounding like a thousand glass shards rubbing together. "We are no longer prisoners of the flesh. We are the vessels for something greater."

Miller leaned in, his eyes narrowing. "Who is 'something greater'?"

"The Guest," the man replied. "The one who waited in the cold between galaxies. We were too fragile to survive the truth, so the Guest gave us a new shape. A shape that can hold the weight of the void."

Miller felt a cold shiver run down his spine. He remembered the reports from the deep-sea cables—the strange, rhythmic pulses of data coming from the ocean floor, signals that had preceded the biotechnology breakthroughs.

The 'Ascension' wasn't a cure. It was a terraforming project. The alien consciousness wasn't saving humanity; it was preparing the soil. It was rewriting human DNA to create a biological interface, a series of living antennas that would allow the Guest to manifest in the physical world.

As he left the penthouse, Miller looked at his own trembling hand. He had taken the 'preventative' serum two weeks ago, fearing he would be left behind. He looked closer and saw a single, iridescent filament shimmering beneath his skin.

He reached for his service weapon, but his fingers wouldn't obey. They were becoming too smooth, too perfect.

"Welcome to the garden, Miller," a voice whispered in his head, a voice that sounded like the death of a star.

Miller closed his eyes and waited for the silver to take his sight.
