The Silent Brother

The world is made of sounds that no one else hears. The hum of the refrigerator is a low, vibrating C-sharp. The sound of the rain on the window is a thousand tiny needles hitting a drum. I am Leo, and I live in a room with no corners, because corners are where the noise gathers and screams. I don't like the noise. I like the silence of the blue light.

The conflict started when the door opened and the noise became a storm. A man walked in. He was big, like a mountain made of leather and salt. He smelled of old smoke and cold wind. He said he was my brother, Julian. I didn't remember a brother. I only remembered the white coats and the way they made me forget the colors.

The second act was a series of flashes. I watched from the corner of the room as Julian fought the men in the black suits. He didn't talk; he just moved. He was like a machine made of bone and anger. I saw him break a man's arm, and the sound was like a dry branch snapping in winter. I didn't feel happy that he was saving me. I felt a cold, sharp fear. Every time he hit someone, the noise in my head got louder. He was a storm, and I was a small, fragile glass.

Julian kept saying my name. "Leo, I've got you. We're leaving." But his voice sounded like a command, not a promise. He moved through the facility with a terrifying speed, clearing the path with a violence that felt unnecessary. He was a god of destruction, and I was the thing he was destroying the world for.

The climax happened in the parking lot, under a flickering neon sign that buzzed like a trapped insect. Julian held me in his arms, his chest heaving, his knuckles bloody. He looked at me with eyes that were full of a desperate, hungry love.

"We're safe now, Leo," he whispered.

I looked up at him, and for a second, the noise stopped. I saw the man he had become. He wasn't a brother; he was a weapon. He had spent so long fighting the world that he had forgotten how to be a person. He had saved my body, but he had brought the war with him.

The final act was a walk to the car. Julian held my hand, but his grip was too tight, a possessive hold that felt like a shackle. As we drove away from the facility, I looked out the window at the New York skyline. The city was a giant, humming machine, and I realized that I had just been moved from one cage to another.

I closed my eyes and tried to find the blue light again. Julian was talking about the future, about a house with a garden and a place where we could be a family. But all I could hear was the sound of the branch snapping in the winter. I leaned my head against the cold glass of the window and waited for the silence to come back.
