The Bureau of Eternal Correction

In the city of Omonoia, sadness was illegal. Not in the sense that you would be arrested for crying, but in the sense that sadness was viewed as a technical malfunction. The Bureau of Eternal Correction was the city's most prestigious institution, tasked with ensuring that the "Average Happiness Index" (AHI) never dipped below 8.5.

Arthur was a Grade 4 Corrector. His job was simple: he would be assigned to a citizen experiencing a "Dip"—a period of grief, depression, or existential dread—and he would use a series of psychological interventions and bureaucratic re-assignments to "correct" the emotion.

"You aren't depressed, Mrs. Gable," Arthur would say with a practiced, empty smile. "You are simply experiencing a misalignment of your social expectations. I have re-assigned your neighbor's dog to your garden. Your AHI should return to 8.7 within the week."

Arthur was the best in his department. He didn't just fix the symptoms; he erased the cause. He was promoted to High Corrector, given the authority to perform "Deep Corrections"—the total erasure of traumatic memories.

Arthur believed he was a hero. He saw himself as a surgeon of the soul, cutting away the cancer of sorrow to leave behind a pure, shimmering joy. He spent his days erasing the memory of dead children, failed marriages, and lost dreams.

But as the years passed, Arthur noticed a strange phenomenon. The citizens of Omonoia were becoming... thin. Not physically, but spiritually. Their laughter sounded like recorded loops; their eyes were bright but vacant. They were happy, yes, but it was a flat, two-dimensional happiness. There was no depth, no contrast, no meaning.

He realized that by erasing the valleys of sorrow, he had also leveled the peaks of joy. Without the memory of loss, the concept of love had become a meaningless word. The city was a sea of smiling shells.

One evening, Arthur looked at his own record. His AHI was a perfect 9.0. He had corrected his own grief after the death of his parents a decade ago. He had erased the pain, but in doing so, he had also erased the reason why he had loved them. He felt nothing when he looked at their photographs. He was the most "corrected" man in the city, and he was utterly empty.

Arthur decided to perform one final, unauthorized correction.

He entered the Central Archive and initiated a "Global Reversion." He didn't just restore the memories of one person; he released every erased trauma, every suppressed grief, and every forgotten heartbreak back into the minds of the citizens of Omonoia.

The effect was instantaneous. A wave of sobbing swept through the city. People fell to their knees in the streets, overwhelmed by the sudden return of their own humanity. It was a symphony of agony, a tidal wave of despair.

Arthur sat in his office and waited. For the first time in ten years, he felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his chest. He remembered his mother's voice, the smell of his father's old coat, and the crushing weight of their absence.

He began to cry. He sobbed until his lungs burned and his eyes were swollen. It was the most miserable he had ever been in his entire life.

And as he wept, he felt a strange, shimmering sensation in his heart. He was sad, yes, but he was finally, for the first time, alive.
