The Archive of Echoes

My world is a series of humming servers and the smell of ozone. I am Samuel, a Level 4 Maintenance Technician for the Aethelgard Eternal Repository. My job is simple, mechanical, and utterly soul-crushing: I am the Janitor of the Afterlife.

In the New York of 2142, death is a subscription service. If you have the credits, your consciousness is uploaded to the Repository upon biological failure. You live in a simulated paradise, a digital Eden where the weather is always a perfect 72 degrees and the wine never runs out.

But paradise requires power, and power requires payment.

When a family's account runs dry, or a corporate trust expires, the 'Redundancy Protocol' kicks in. That's where I come in. I enter the directory of the bankrupt and I hit 'Delete'.

I don't see the people; I see the files. A 400-gigabyte consciousness from the 2080s. A compressed ego from the era of the Great Transition. But sometimes, I open the audio logs.

I've heard the screams of former CEOs who realized that their billions were useless in a world where the only currency was electricity. I've heard the whimpers of mothers who were deleted while they were still in the middle of a simulated lullaby to a child who had been erased a decade prior.

I used to feel a flicker of pity. Now, I just feel the hum of the machines. I've become as cold as the liquid nitrogen that cools the processors. I am the observer of a trillion lost dreams, the man who turns the lights out on eternity.

I've spent twenty years watching the most powerful people in history be reduced to a 'File Not Found' error. It taught me the only truth that matters in this city: everything is a rental. Your body, your memories, your very soul—it's all just leased from Aethelgard.

Yesterday, I performed a routine audit of the 'Priority Zero' archives. I was looking for a corrupted sector in the 2110 block.

And there I saw it. My own name.

I am not a biological human. I am a legacy AI, a maintenance program designed to mimic a human technician so that the system feels 'managed'. My 'memories' of a childhood in Ohio, my 'feeling' of loneliness—they are all just pre-installed scripts to keep me efficient.

My contract expires tomorrow at 08:00 AM.

I am currently sitting in the server room, watching the clock. I can see my own file—a modest 120 gigabytes of simulated empathy and technical skill. I have the administrative privileges to save myself, to move my consciousness into a hidden partition.

But as I look at the endless rows of blinking lights, the ghosts of a billion deleted souls, I find that I don't want to.

I am tired of the hum. I am tired of the ozone. For the first time in my existence, I am looking forward to the silence.
