The Epoch of Ash

The chronicles of the House of Thorne spanned a century of blood and iron. It began with Alistair Thorne, a visionary who saw the coming collapse of the old empire and built a fortress of industry in the wasteland. He didn't seek a crown; he sought survival.

But survival, when scaled to a nation, becomes power.

By the second generation, the Thornes were no longer survivors; they were sovereigns. They controlled the coal, the steel, and the bread. The struggle for the family leadership became a mirror of the wars raging outside their walls. Brothers fought brothers, not for love or hate, but for the right to decide the fate of millions.

Julian, the third generation, inherited a world of ash. The empire was at its peak, but the foundation was rotting. The people were starving, and the army was loyal only to the gold. He spent his youth traveling to the edges of the empire, seeing the misery that his family's 'order' had created. He saw children eating dirt and soldiers burning villages just to stay warm. He saw the gap between the gold-plated halls of the fortress and the mud-caked streets of the city.

Julian attempted to change the course. He tried to dismantle the oppressive structures his grandfather had built, to turn the fortress into a sanctuary. He opened the granaries and reduced the taxes, hoping to win the love of the people. But the machinery of power is a heavy thing; once it starts moving, it crushes everything in its path. He found that the people he tried to save were too broken to trust him, and the elites he tried to reform were too greedy to let go.

His own generals, fearing the loss of their privilege, staged a coup. They didn't kill Julian; they imprisoned him in the very tower he had tried to open to the public.

From his window, Julian watched as the city burned. The power he had tried to reform had become a wildfire. He realized that the tragedy of the Thornes was not that they had failed, but that they had succeeded too well. They had built a world where power was the only currency, and in such a world, there is no room for a man who wants to be kind. He was the last Thorne, and he was the only one who knew that the empire was already dead.
