Lena watched Jupiter's moon Europa flatten. It did not explode. It did not crumble. It simply became two-dimensional, like a photograph being pressed flat against a table.

She was at the Deep Space Observatory, sitting at her desk, looking through the telescope, when it happened. Europa, a world of ice and ocean and the faint hope of life, was being compressed into a plane. Craters became patterns. Mountains became lines. The ice became texture. The ocean became colour. And in the end, where a world had once existed, there was a painting.

A perfect, infinitely detailed painting of a world that had been.

Lena documented the Fold's progression. It was not random. It was moving inward, from the outer solar system toward the sun. Mars flattened next. Then Saturn. Each planet became a work of art: a perfect, two-dimensional representation of what was once three-dimensional.

It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. It was also the most terrifying.

She was a former painter turned astrophysicist. She saw the universe in colours and shapes that other scientists could not perceive. Where they saw data, she saw compositions. Where they saw equations, she saw brushstrokes. The Fold was not destruction. It was art.

The Dreamer sent her visions. A mathematician who communicated through dreams, sending fragmented visions of higher-dimensional geometry. In the visions, Lena saw the truth: the Fold was not an attack. It was a natural process. The universe was unfolding from ten dimensions down to two, and they were simply witnessing one stage of it.

Every civilization that had ever existed had experienced this. Every civilization had watched its world become a painting. Every civilization had died, not with a bang, but with a whisper—the whisper of three-dimensional matter becoming two-dimensional.

Earth began to Fold. Lena sat at her desk. She picked up a paintbrush. She began to paint—not what she saw, but what she felt. The Fold reached the observatory. Her desk, her instruments, her body—all compressed into a two-dimensional plane.

But her painting remained. A three-dimensional object in a two-dimensional world. The last painting. The last act of defiance. The last proof that something once had depth.

She painted it with the last of her three-dimensional hand, on the last three-dimensional surface, in the last three-dimensional moment. It was a circle. Inside the circle was a sun. And around the sun, orbiting in perfect, impossible three-dimensional space, was a single tear.
